Did we ever have a thought that we can write the numbers like we pronounce them? For example, instead of writing 1, 2 we can write one and two. We can name all the natural numbers like this. This is known as numbers in words.

When written in words, each number has its place value according to the Indian place value chart or the International place value chart.

Difference between Indian and International number systems

Rules to write number names

Memorize the place value system thoroughly. The places are very crucial and universally followed.
Remember the spellings carefully.
One can see a pattern while naming numbers from 1 to 20. After that, the pattern repeats, which can be followed by everyone. One has to memorize the words thirty, forty, fifty, sixty, seventy, eighty, ninety, and if needed, from eleven to twenty.
The multiples of 100 and so on can be written directly with the main numbers. E.g., 400 can be written as four hundred, 500 as five hundred, 7000 as seven thousand, and so on.
To write the number with more than two places, put the left-most name first and then move towards the right while naming them. E.g., 1568 can be written as one thousand five hundred and sixty-eight, 69245 can be written as sixty-nine thousand two hundred and forty-five, and so on.

Solution

Indian system: - Count the place value from right onwards as ones, tens, hundreds, and so on.

We get the position of 4 as crores.

Therefore, naming the series from left, we get,

Four crores twenty seven lakhs eighty five thousand nine hundred and sixteen.

International system: - Using the same steps as above, we get,

Forty two millions seven hundred eighty five thousand nine hundred and sixteen.
