Science in Everyday Life and its Importance

Science in Everyday Life and its Importance - Uses of Science in Our Daily Lives, Uses of Science Across Multiple Fields and Industries, Practice Problems & FAQs

Does the word science make you think of high-tech labs and researchers in white coats like the ones in this picture? This is often an accurate image of science but not always. If you look up science in a dictionary, you would find that it comes from a Latin word that means “having knowledge.” However, this isn’t an adequate definition either.

Science is the methodic, algorithm-based study of natural phenomena. It developed thousands of years ago in response to the undying thirst of the human mind to discover the secrets of the universe in which it is living. To understand its importance in our daily lives, let us look at some of the biggest milestones in the scientific journey that we have taken collectively with our ancestors and our descendants.

What is Science?

Science is a methodical, rational investigation into how the universe functions. Science is a field that changes constantly. The methodical observation, experimentation, and measurement of the nature and behaviour of the material and physical cosmos, as well as the creation of laws to generalise these facts, are also considered to be components of science.

One of humanity's blessings is science. It significantly contributed to raising humanity's standard of living. Science is everywhere and has complete power over every part of our existence. Every aspect of our existence centres around science.

The continued efforts and the struggle for expanding the horizons of systematic knowledge created a need for describing and understanding nature and the events associated with it. This need led to the birth of what is known today as science. And today science has become an important subject. Besides, events like cooking, boiling of water, burning of a candle, curdling of milk, electricity, motorized vehicles, cell phones etc. generally make us realize the presence of science in everyday life. From the above examples, we can sense the broadness and importance of science in everyday life. In order to make the study convenient, it was further divided into subgroups such as physics, chemistry, biology, geology etc. The science in our life is not just limited to cooking food, big industrial factories that manufacture a variety of commodities using various techniques are also a part of our daily life. From the toothbrush, we use in the morning to the high-tech smartphones which we use confirm the omnipresence and applications of science in everyday life.

Science's Importance in Everyday Life

Have you ever questioned how we maintain ourselves cool in the presence of coolers, fans, and air conditioning? Humans are inherently inquisitive creatures who are fascinated by and intrigued about the causes of occurrences. However, one of the main issues facing all people was how to investigate the characteristics of a specific species or thing. Some scientists have combined the study of a number of topics under the umbrella discipline of science.

Science has been extremely beneficial to people. The investigation of environmental issues by man, a rational being, has been peculiar and has led to several discoveries around the world. Science is the study of the environment. Many branches of science, including physics, chemistry, and biology, are researched, as well as creatures, chemicals, the force, the earth, plants, and other topics.

According to Einstein “All our science measured against reality, is primitive and childlike - and yet is the most precious thing we have.”

Here are some examples of how science is applied in daily life:

  • To get from one point to another, we use bicycles, cars, or bikes, these all are inventions of science.
  • We use soap, which was developed by science.
  • For cooking, we utilise LPG gas, a stove, etc.; all of these are products of science.
  • Even the building we dwell in is a creation of science.
  • Even the garments we wear were created by science, including the iron we use to iron our clothes.

Uses of Science Across Multiple Fields and Industries

Uses of science in different fields are as follows:

Agriculture:Science has made a significant impact in agriculture by giving so much. Machines are now even available for planting seeds in fields. Science is responsible for inventions like the tractor, thresher, drip irrigation system, sprinkler irrigation system, etc. Chemical science also provides all forms of fertiliser.

Medicine:The use of science is the sole foundation of the medical field. All medications are provided by medical chemistry. Science also provides the tools that are employed in the medical industry. Science has created a variety of devices, including stretchers, the ECG machine, MRI machines, and even injections.

Transportation:Science has created every type of vehicle. The world has become smaller and thanks go to science. From Kashmir to Kanyakumari, it takes only a few hours. Science has created many machines which are used for commuting and transportation, including bicycles, scooters, cars, buses, trains, trucks and aircraft. By utilising the tools that technology has provided, we can transport commodities quickly and easily.

Communication:The globe has become incredibly small thanks to science. You can speak with anyone, anywhere in the world. Science is responsible for many advancements, including telephones and mobile phones. All of these communication channels are also quite inexpensive to use. The average person can therefore afford everything. Technology has made utilising a mobile phone to chat with someone very simple and affordable.

Construction:All structures we have built are based on science. Buildings are constructed using the technology made possible by science. Science has produced many of the tools used in the construction industry, including motor graders, bulldozers, backhoe loaders, etc.

Photography: We now have a variety of photographic tools thanks to science. Today, clicking a photo is pretty simple. Even the smallest of your cell phones have cameras. In addition to this, science has produced a wide range of devices, including computers, that are helpful in every aspect of our lives.

Practice Problems

Q1. Which bacteria is responsible for the formation of curd?

A. Lactic acid bacteria
B. Lactobacillus Acidophilus
C. Lactobacillus aureus
D. Bacillus radicicola

Answer: (B)

Solution:Lactobacillus converts milk to curd by producing lactic acid and reducing the pH of the milk. These bacteria convert lactose into lactic acid, which imparts a sour taste to curd. So, the correct answer is option (B).

Q2. Which of the following is a chemical fertilizer?

(A) Compost
(B) Bark of neem
(C) NPK
(D) Bone meal

Answer: (C)

Solution:NPK (Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Potassium) is chemical fertilizer. So, the correct answer is option (C).

Q3. What is the full form of LPG?

(A) Liquefied Pure Gas
(B) Liquefied Petroleum Gas
(C) Low Petroleum Gas
(D) Liquid Petroleum Gas

Answer: (B)

Solution:LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) is a hydrocarbon gas that exists in a liquefied form. LPG is a colourless, low carbon, and highly efficient fuel majorly containing a mixture of propane and butane. So, the correct answer is option (B).

Q4. What is the full form of MRI?

(A) Magnetic Resonance Imaging
(B) Magnifying Resonance Imaging
(C) Magnetic Radiation Imaging
(D) Magnetic Resonance Injection

Answer: (B)

Solution:Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a non-invasive imaging technology that produces three-dimensional detailed anatomical images. So, the correct answer is option (B).

Frequently Asked Questions - FAQs

Q1. Should people avoid driving cars to work or school because it contributes to climate change and the serious problems associated with it?
Answer:
This example shows that ethical decisions may not be all or nothing. For example, rather than driving alone, people might carpool with others. This would reduce their impact on climate change. They could also try to reduce their impact in other ways. For example, they might turn down their thermostat in cold weather so their furnace burns less fuel.

Q2. What is the full form of SCIENCE?
Answer:
The meaning or full form of SCIENCE is "Systematic and Comprehensive Investigation and Exploration of Nature's Causes and Effects. So, basically, science is the knowledge to gather about how the universe functions.

Q3. What is the importance of fertilizers for farmers?
Answer:
By giving soil the proper balance of nutrients, fertilisers play the role of increasing production and ensuring healthy output. Without fertilisers, the soil would become exhausted, making it particularly challenging to cultivate plants. Both they and we are unable to thrive on water alone.

Q4. What is the application of science in photography?
Answer:
In the science of photography both physics and chemistry are used. The science applied to the lenses, the electronics of the camera and the method of developing film. The science which relates to the action of light on sensitive bodies in the production of pictures and the fixation of images is called photography.
