Clearing JEE Main is a big milestone, but the real journey to an engineering seat begins with counselling. Every year, lakhs of aspirants compete for seats at India's top centrally funded institutes, and those who understand the process often land better colleges and branches.

This guide walks you through the JEE Main counselling process, right from the registration process to reporting, with dates, eligibility, documents, fees, quotas, and practical tips, all in one place.

What is JEE Main Counselling?

JEE Main counselling is the centralised seat allocation process that converts your JEE rank into an admission offer. It is conducted online by the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA), a body set up by the Ministry of Education.

Instead of applying to each institute separately, you register once on the official portal (josaa.nic.in), fill your preferences and let the allocation system assign seats based on merit, category, choices and seat availability.

In practice, three processes sit under the umbrella of JEE Main counselling:

• JoSAA: The main counselling for NITs, IIITs, IIEST Shibpur and other Government Funded Technical Institutes (GFTIs). JEE Advanced qualifiers also use JoSAA to get into IITs.
• CSAB Special Rounds: Additional rounds for candidates who want to fill seats that remain vacant after JoSAA ends.
• CSAB NEUT and SFTI counselling: Separate processes for supernumerary seats in North Eastern institutes and for Self Financing Technical Institutes.

Note that JoSAA does not cover state engineering colleges or private universities. Those run their own admission processes, which we cover later in this blog.

The National Testing Agency releases category-wise qualifying percentiles after the JEE Main results. Step-by-Step JoSAA Counselling Process

The counselling process is conducted entirely online and follows a fixed sequence. Here's what to expect from registration to reporting.

1. Register on the JoSAA portal. Log in with your JEE Main application number and password (or JEE Advanced credentials for IITs). Your details are pulled in automatically.
2. Verify your details. Check your name, parents' names, date of birth, category, gender, nationality, rank and contact information. Report any error to the exam authority immediately.
3. Fill in your choices. Search for institutes and branches, add them to your list and arrange them in strict order of preference. There is no upper limit on the number of choices.
4. Track the mock allotments. Two mock rounds show where you might land based on your current list. They are indicative and help you improve the list.
5. Lock your choices. Lock manually before the deadline. If you forget, the system auto-locks your last saved list, but you lose the chance to review it.
6. Check the seat allotment. Results are published on the portal after each round. You also receive updates by SMS or email.
7. Select Freeze, Float or Slide. This decides whether you keep the seat or stay in the running for an upgrade.
8. Upload documents and pay the seat acceptance fee. Complete online verification within the reporting window.
9. Report to the institute. After the final formalities, report as per the schedule and pay the remaining institute fee.

• Choose Freeze when you are fully satisfied with the allotted seat and want to stop participating.

• State engineering counselling: Processes such as KCET, MHT CET, WBJEE and REAP admit students to state colleges.
• Private universities: Institutions like BITS, VIT, SRM, Manipal and KIIT run their own admission processes, and some accept JEE Main scores.
• Institute-level admissions: Some colleges offer their own counselling or management quota seats.
• CSAB Special Rounds: If you qualified JEE Main but remained unallotted or did not take part in JoSAA, check whether you meet CSAB norms for vacant seats.
