1800-102-2727The Mathematical Olympiad Programme in India helps students take part in the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO). It is organized by the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE) under the National Board for Higher Mathematics (NBHM), which is part of the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), Government of India. This program aims to find and develop young mathematical talent in pre-university students across the country.
To help with training and selection, India is divided into different regions, each managed by a Regional Coordinator. Two special groups of schools, Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas (JNV) and Kendriya Vidyalayas (KV), are also considered separate regions, each with its own coordinator. This setup ensures that young mathematicians get the support and resources they need to succeed in the Olympiad competition.
The journey begins with the Indian Olympiad Qualifier in Mathematics (IOQM), formerly known as PRMO. This is a three-hour exam consisting of 30 questions. Each answer is either a single-digit or two-digit number and is marked on a machine-readable OMR sheet. The question paper is available in English and Hindi.

After qualifying through IOQM, the second stage is the Regional Mathematical Olympiad (RMO). This is a three-hour exam that features six highly challenging problems, requiring students to provide detailed written proofs. The RMO is conducted in English, Hindi, and other regional languages as determined by the respective regional coordinators.

Top performers from the RMO advance to the third stage, the Indian National Mathematical Olympiad (INMO). Held annually on the third Sunday of January, the INMO is a prestigious examination that tests the students' problem-solving abilities through six complex problems requiring detailed proofs.

The top 65 students from the INMO are invited to attend the International Mathematical Olympiad Training Camp (IMOTC), which is typically held at the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE) or another institute in India. The camp, conducted from April to May, focuses on strengthening conceptual understanding and enhancing problem-solving skills.
The camp includes contributions from expert resource persons from various leading institutions across the country.
Before their departure for the IMO, the selected team of six students undergoes an intensive 8-10 day Pre-Departure Camp (PDC) at HBCSE. This camp is designed to fine-tune their skills and ensure they are fully prepared for the international competition.
The final stage of the Olympiad journey concludes with the participation of the selected Indian team at the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO). The team, comprising six students, is accompanied by four experienced teachers or mentors. This stage is the culmination of years of hard work, where the students compete against the best young mathematicians from around the world.
