Structural Organisation in Animals

Structural Organisation in Animals

Animals are made of many parts that work together to keep them alive. These parts are arranged in levels. The smallest part is the cell. Cells join to form tissues. Tissues join to form organs. Organs work together in organ systems. All organ systems together make the whole animal body. This helps animals perform many functions and live well.

The Cell – The Basic Unit of Life

The cell is the smallest unit of an organism that has structure and is functional. It acts like a small factory. Inside, tiny parts called organelles do different functions. They make energy, build proteins, and remove waste.

Animals have many types of cells. Muscle cells help the body move by pulling and relaxing. Nerve cells send messages to control the body. Each cell has a special function to help the body work.

Tissues – Groups of Similar Cells

When cells that look alike join, they form a tissue. Animals have four main types of tissues:

Epithelial Tissue

This tissue covers the body outside and lines the inside of organs. It protects the body and controls what enters and leaves. Epithelial tissue has no blood vessels (avascular). It gets food and oxygen by diffusion from the underlying connective tissue.

Connective Tissue

Connective tissue holds and joins body parts. It includes bones, cartilage, blood, and fat. It makes proteins like collagen and elastin. These give the body strength and stretchiness.

Muscular Tissue

Muscular tissue is made of long muscle cells (muscle fibres) that have myofibrils. It helps the body move by pulling and relaxing. There are three kinds of muscle tissue:

  • Skeletal muscles help move the body.
  • Smooth muscles work inside organs.
  • Cardiac muscles make the heart beat.

Nervous Tissue

Nervous tissue has neurons (for transmitting impulses) and neuroglial cells (for support, nourishment, and protection of neurons).

Neurons send messages to control the body. Neuroglial cells help and protect neurons. This tissue helps animals react quickly to what is around them.

Organs – Different Tissues Working Together

An organ is made of different tissues that work together to perform a role. For example, the heart has muscular, connective, epithelial, and nervous tissues. These tissues help the heart pump blood. The stomach is another organ. It uses tissues to make juices and move food to help digestion.

Organ Systems – Groups of Organs

Many organs working together form an organ system. Each system has a job that helps the animal live. Examples are:

  • The digestive system breaks food into smaller parts. It helps the body get nutrients.
  • The respiratory system enables gas exchange. It lets oxygen enter the blood and carbon dioxide move out, mainly through lungs.
  • The circulatory system moves blood and nutrients. It also carries oxygen and waste.
  • The nervous system controls body actions and responses. All these systems work together to keep the body healthy.

These systems work as a team to keep the animal healthy.

Organism – The Whole Animal

All organ systems together make the whole animal. This setup lets animals do many activities like moving, growing, and reacting to the outer world. Even if animals look different, they all have this basic structure.

Summary

Animals’ bodies have many parts that work together. The smallest part is the cell. Cells join to make tissues. Tissues join to make organs. Organs work together in organ systems. These systems help animals breathe, eat, and move. All organ systems together form the whole animal called the organism.
