The latest information about the CBSE Class 12 Physics Syllabus is right here! CBSE has released the class 12th Physics syllabus. The CBSE has separated the entire syllabus into two semesters, with exams for each term being held independently. The Physics syllabus for CBSE Class 12th consists of 9 units and 14 chapters separated into two terms. The Physics syllabus board has awarded four units in the first term of class 12th and five units in the second term. The theoretical portion will be worth 70 points, while the evaluation scheme will be worth 30 points.
Students should pay great attention to the Physics concepts for class 12th and understand the fundamental ideas of Physics from NCERT textbooks. It will aid students in their future academics and competitive exams like JEE Main, JEE Advanced, CUCET NTA , and NEET UG, other olympiads in India.
The CBSE examinations for term two will be subjective. Students will not be allowed the luxury of MCQs this time. There will be short and long answer-type questions for the Physics examination. However, only the remaining 50% of the syllabus will be tested (5 units), so students will still have a chance to earn better grades. The second term paper is a total of 50 marks. The written paper in this term contains a total of 35 marks. The remaining 15 marks will be awarded based on internal assessments and practical exams held at respective CBSE schools.
Important Chapters
One or two chapters are not of utmost importance in subjects like Physics. All the chapters are important. It is undeniable that there is a different weightage for every chapter for CBSE 12th Physics term two examinations. Some chapters have more weightage over the others. Students often skip the chapters with less weightage and dedicate their time to high-weightage chapters. Remember that each mark is counted in your percentage. Students should not be careless to leave the topics covering fewer marks. Even half a point can have a huge impact on a student’s result. Hence, all the chapters of Physics are crucial for the CBSE Physics exam. Also, these chapters and topics hold great importance in competitive exams like JEE, NEET, and the olympiads.
Provided below is the list of all chapters and their weightage in the CBSE term two paper, the total number of classes required, and the in-chapter important topics that a student must focus on for this term’s question paper.
Unit Wise List of Important Physic Chapters
Unit 5 and 6
The highest weightage in the Physics CBSE class 12 paper is for Units 5 and 6. Unit 5 ‘Electromagnetic Waves and Unit 6 ‘Optics’ will award the students 17 out of 35. Almost half of the question paper will consist of only these two units. The chapters in each division are:
Unit 5: Electromagnetic Waves
Chapter 8 | Electromagnetic Waves |
Important Topics: EM waves
Displacement current Nature of EM waves |
Unit 6: Optics
Optics is the biggest unit of Class 12th Physics. More than ten marks questions will appear from this unit in the examination. A total of 18 lectures are required to learn the entire unit. Students must be well versed with every important topic mentioned below to score full marks in this unit. Optics is divided into two chapters: Ray Optics and Optical Instruments and Wave Optics.
Chapter 9 | Ray Optics and Optical Instruments |
Important Topics: Image formation by spherical mirrors
Image formation by spherical lenses Power and combination of lenses Nature of EM waves Total Internal Reflection Natural phenomenon due to light Refraction through a Prism Eye Microscope Telescope |
Problems related to image formation are dominant in this chapter. The working of the eye and the principles behind microscope and telescope have appeared many times in the board examination. The derivation-type questions are taken from refraction and total internal reflection through a prism.
Chapter 10 | Wave Optics |
Important Topics: Incoherent and coherent waves addition
Reflection and refraction of plane waves using Huygen principle Interference and Young’s double-slit experiment Diffraction of light Polarisation by scattering Resolving power of optical Instruments |
Questions from Wave Optics, especially Young’s double-slit experiment, have been asked every time in the board examination. Lots of numerical, derivations and theoretical questions are asked from this unit.
Units 7 and 8
Units 7 and 8 contain three chapters that carry 11 marks in the CBSE class 12th Physics term two examinations. These units mainly deal with modern-day Physics related to atoms and light. The chapters in these units are more important for JEE and NEET examinations.
Unit 7: Dual Nature of Radiation and Matter
Chapter 11 | Dual Nature of Radiation and Matter |
Important Topics: Photoelectric effect
De Broglie hypothesis Davisson and Germer experiment Einstein photoelectric equation |
All these topics are asked in the CBSE previous year’s question papers. The photoelectric effect is asked about almost every year. Long answer-type questions may occur from the Davisson and Germer experiment.
Unit 8: Atoms
The first chapter of unit 8 is Atoms. The chapter focuses mainly on the Bohr atomic model and the hydrogen spectrum. A student can expect 3 – 4 marks questions from this chapter.
Chapter 12 | Dual Nature of Radiation and Matter |
Important Topics: Atomic spectra
Electron Orbits De-Broglie explanation of Bohr’s postulates Bohr Model of a Hydrogen atom Line spectra of a Hydrogen atom |
Unit 8: Nuclei
The nucleus is a small chapter with a major theoretical part and less numerical. Students can easily score full marks for this chapter with 2 – 3 days of preparation. If a numerical Board examination occurs in this chapter, it will be related to radioactive decay.
Chapter 13 | Nuclei |
Important Topics: Nuclear binding energy
Radioactivity Radioactive decays |
Unit 9
Unit 9 contains a single chapter worth seven marks which is Semiconductor Electronics. The chapter deals with a semiconductor material, the devices made of semiconductor materials, and simple circuits using these devices. The important topics for this unit are:
Chapter 14 | Semiconductor Electronics: Material, Devices and Simple Circuits |
Important Topics: Intrinsic semiconductors
Extrinsic semiconductors p-n Junction diode n-p-n and p-n-p transistor Junction diode as a rectifier Zener diode as a voltage regulator Logic gates |

Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is the best way to finish the CBSE Class 12 Physics syllabus?
First, go over the entire Physics course for 12th grade. Make a monthly schedule and split the units according to it. For example, you can select a unit based on your preferences. Finish the study of the unit you’ve chosen. If a topic is troubling you, get assistance from your teacher or conduct an internet search. Completing all chapters and revising them is also a good idea. Multiple revisions allow you to keep all units for a longer period. Carry on with the process for the remaining units.
2. How can I pique my interest in the Physics examination?
1. Physics is a tough subject for the majority of pupils. They were unable to answer numerical problems and recall derivations. Here are a few pointers to consider. Follow them, and Physics will become more intriguing.
2. Start with the fundamentals. To comprehend the intermolecular force, you must first understand the concept of force.
3. Consider how you can apply concepts to your everyday life.
4. Don’t mug up the derivation; learn it step by step.
3. Will questions from the communication system appear in the class 12th Physics paper? If yes, then what type?
In many reference books, students may find one more chapter known as Communication System. It is a short chapter with no complex mathematics and theoretical parts. You may get questions from this chapter. The questions asked in this chapter are related to the elements of a communication system, the propagation of electromagnetic waves, the block diagram of communication, and basic terminologies. One numerical amplitude modulation may occur in the exam.
4. How do I get a copy of the CBSE 12th Physics sample paper?
A.Visit the CBSE Academic website at ‘cbseacademic.nic.in‘ to obtain a copy of the sample paper. Choose ‘Sample Question Papers for XII (2021-22)’ from the drop-down menu. On the following page, you’ll find a list of all the disciplines and sample papers, and grading methods. A new tab containing the question paper in pdf format will appear when you click on the required subject. The pdf will save to your computer after smashing the download button on your browser.
