To err is human, but silly errors in a fiercely competitive exam like JEE Advanced cannot be forgiven, as it can cost you your seat in a premium institution like the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT). Every student preparing for JEE Advanced exam should remember that speed and accuracy hold the key to bagging an entry into the college of your dreams. Therefore, students should strengthen their preparations and make optimal use of time to ace their studies. With more than a month to go for JEE Advanced exam, it is the right time for students to practice as much as possible and aim at giving their best shot.

In JEE Advanced, there are two papers, Paper 1 & 2. Candidates have to appear for both the papers featuring MCQs as well as numerical-type questions. The competitive exam is conducted to judge a student’s theoretical knowledge alongside reasoning ability, comprehension skills, and analytical power. Students must ensure that they do not make any of the following common mistakes that can deprive them of realizing their dreams.

8 Silly Mistakes to Avoid in JEE Advanced

    1. Resorting to Guesswork: At times, you may get lucky, but guesswork should be avoided as this can lead to loss of marks. A student should be confident enough in his reasoning to attempt a question he is unsure of. However, it is always advisable to skip the question if you’re not confident about the right answer. In this way, you save time and marks. With negative marking in this examination, it is advisable not to attempt a question in which a candidate lacks confidence.

    2. Going Beyond Syllabus: With only a month and a few days left for the exam date, going beyond the syllabus can only increase your burden and add to your confusion. Learning additional lessons at this stage of your preparation level is not advisable, as it may complicate your study techniques as well as schedule. You may have to invest additional time to master the new techniques. Therefore, instead of spending time mastering new methods, invest time in practicing what you have learned and stick on to your JEE Advanced syllabus to lead your way to success.

    3. Buying Multiple Reference Books: Well, you aim to amplify your preparations by giving your best shot. This should not be done with the help of additional reference books. Different reference books exercise different methods, which can leave an aspirant confused. Therefore, restrict yourself from buying or learning from too many reference books. Stick on to one or two books and seek help from mentors in case you want to purchase additional books.

    4. Skipping a Lesson/Subject: In the JEE Advanced exam, students are supposed to pay equal attention to all three subjects, i.e. Physics Chemistry, and Maths. They cannot afford to ignore a subject or leave a section unprepared. The paper pattern of the exam is unpredictable. Questions can arise in different ways from each of the three subjects. Leaving out a section or giving less importance to a subject is prone to augmenting the stress levels of a candidate at the time of the exam. Therefore, it is advisable to give the same priority to all three subjects and fetch a decent rank.

    5. Leaving Questions Unattempted Midway: While you may have been successful in scoring marks during mocks tests by leaving questions on the calculation stage, the same strategy cannot assure you success every time. Therefore, in your JEE Advanced exam, try and attempt fewer questions with all calculations rather than answering more questions without calculations. This technique will improve your speed and accuracy.

    6. Making Calculation Errors: Calculation errors are bound to happen if you attempt your paper under stress. You may spot the mistake at a later stage, but you tend to lose time, which is crucial for the examination. Therefore, keep yourself calm and cool while attempting the exam. Also, practice as many JEE Advanced mock test papers as possible in an exam-like environment to save yourself from committing such mistakes.

    7. Avoiding Learning from your Mistakes: While you may have committed a few silly errors in JEE Advanced exam and may have spotted them after leaving the examination hall, do not be afraid of confronting your mistakes. Learn from them and ensure that you do not repeat the same in the JEE Advanced exam.

    8. Resorting Entirely to Rote Techniques: While some concepts require rote learning, all the concepts cannot be learned by heart for the examination. Especially, in a competitive examination such as JEE Advanced, do away with rote learning techniques and develop a deep understanding of every topic.

Following the above points will help you in reducing silly mistakes in the JEE exam.
