International Museum Day is a global day celebrated annually on the 18th of May. The International Council of Museums organizes this event. This day highlights a theme that keeps changing each year. A museum is a permanent, non-profit organization that is in the service of society as well as its development. It’s open to the public to obtain, conserve, research, communicate and display humanity plus its environment for enjoyment, study, and education purpose.

The objective of the International Museum Day is to raise awareness about the fact that, “Museums are an important means of cultural exchange and development of mutual understanding, cooperation and peace among people.” This day was first celebrated 40 years ago. Different museums from all across the world participate in the International Museum Day. Last year, almost 37,000 museums participated in this event.
