The “Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana” (KVPY) is a program started in 1999 by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India to encourage students to take up research careers in areas of basic sciences, engineering and medicine. The aim of the program is to identify and encourage talented and motivated students to pursue a career in research. This program aims to assist students to realize their potential and to ensure that the best scientific talent is groomed for research and development in the country.
The selection process for KVPY 2021 will only consist of the KVPY aptitude test. No interview round will be held this year. The question paper will consist of MCQs and will be divided into 2 parts. Students can be asked questions from Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Biology subjects. The level of the aptitude test is to be the same for Stream SA, SB, and SX.
Previously, the merit list for KVPY used to be based on 75% weight-age for Aptitude Test marks and 25% weight-age for the interview marks in all the streams, but this year, it will be based just on the aptitude test.
That said, sometimes to succeed you need to learn from the experience of others. Sometimes by following the footsteps of those who emerged as winners can help you to a great extent. Taking this into consideration, we spoke to some of the KVPY toppers such as Akshat Kaushik (AIR 1), Chirag Falor (AIR 3) and Sarvagya Jain (AIR 4). Here are some of the valuable tips shared by these KVPY toppers that can help you to a great extent if you are preparing for the KVPY exam.
TIPS TO PREPARE FOR KVPY
1. Understand the Syllabus and Exam Pattern
To be able to crack any exam, our toppers believe it is important to understand the syllabus and exam pattern. Though there is no prescribed syllabus for the KVPY Aptitude test, you can refer to syllabus up to class X for SA, up to class XII for SX and up to 1st year of undergraduate program for SB. The syllabus demands conceptual and bit higher-level application and analytical approach. Apart from that, you should align your JEE/ NEET preparation with KVPY just like our toppers.
To help you understand the dominating topics/portions in each subject, the National Academic Department at Aakash Institute has analyzed the past year papers of KVPY (Aptitude) test.
Basis their analysis, here are Subject-wise Important Topics at a glance:
Physics – Light, Electricity, Motion, Heat, Rigid Body Dynamics, Magnetic Effect of Current, Nuclear Physics
Chemistry – Carbon & compounds (General Organic Chemistry & Reaction Mechanism), Mole Concept, Atomic Structure, Metals & Non-metals, Chemical Bonding, Chemical Bonding
Mathematics – Geometry, Number System, Mensuration, Progressions, Polynomials, Algebraic Expressions, Coordinate Geometry
Biology – Genetics, Cell & Cell Division, Biomolecules, Ecology, Body Fluid & Circulation, Body Fluid & Circulation, Origin and Evolution, Cellular respiration
Physics – System of Particles and Rotational Motion, Thermodynamics, Ray Optics, Thermal Properties of Matter, Dual Nature of Radiation and Matter, Moving Charges & Magnetism, Kinetic Theory, Oscillations, Electrostatic Potential and Capacitance, Atoms
Chemistry – Coordination Compounds, Electrochemistry, Thermodynamics, Aldehydes, Ketones and Carboxylic Acids, Equilibrium, Haloalkanes and Haloarenes, The p-Block Elements, Alcohols, Phenols and Ethers, Chemical Bonding and Molecular structure
Mathematics – Conic Sections, Integrals (Indefinite and Definite), Complex Numbers & Quadratic Equations, Trigonometric Functions, Probability, Relations and Functions, Permutations and Combinations
Biology – Principles of Inheritance & Variation, Molecular Basis of Inheritance, Biomolecules, Biotechnology-Principles and Processes, Human Health & Disease, Photosynthesis in Plants, Organisms and Populations
“For KVPY preparation, I used to refer to the study material provided by Aakash for NEET and AIIMS. It consisted of different types of questions and level of questions which helped me to prepare for KVPY with an edge.” – Akshat Kaushik (KVPY (SX) AIR 1)
2. Solve Previous Year Papers
To familiarize with the exam pattern and kind of questions asked, our toppers believe it is essential to solve as many previous year papers as possible. This not only helps gain an insight into the KVPY Aptitude test but also analyze the difficulty level of questions, topics covered, types of questions asked, etc. Solving previous year papers also helps in better time management.
“I used to solve the previous year sample papers for KVPY preparation. It helped me analyze what kinds of questions are asked.” – Sarvagya Jain (KVPY AIR 4)
3. Online Mock Tests
KVPY Aptitude test is conducted in Computer Based Test (CBT) mode. Hence, it is imperative to acquaint yourself with online test taking format. For that you should practice ample tests in CBT mode and preferably in real test environment to get an idea of the actual exam scenario. You can also take the Online Test Series Program for KVPY just like Akshat Kaushik and assess your performance against thousands of KVPY aspirants.
“Aakash had a lot of CBTs for practice. So, I was quite accustomed to it. I would advise everyone to attempt at least five-six exams in CBT mode on KVPY exam pattern and in a very realistic environment as it can be quite intimidating for those who have never taken a test in CBT mode.” – Akshat Kaushik (KVPY AIR 1)
