Gandhi Jayanti Speech: Every year 2nd of October is celebrated as Gandhi Jayanti. While the country observes a national holiday, there are multiple events like campaigns, rallies, poster-making, and speeches are organised in every corner of the country. Mahatma Gandhi is an inspiration for millions of people. On this day, schools organise various cultural programmes to instill the value of leadership, simplicity, and peace in students.  Schools and educational institutions hold activities like essay-writing, art and poetry competitions, plays, and several other engaging activities to observe Gandhi’s ideologies once again.

“An eye for eye only ends up making the whole world blind”

    – Mahatma Gandhi

    All About Mahatma Gandhi

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi also famously known as Mahatma Gandhi, was given the title of “Father of the Nation” by Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose for his persistent struggles to gain independence. The Nobel leader Rabindranath Tagore gave him the title of ‘Mahatma’ which means ‘the one with the greatest soul’. This year is his 153rd birth anniversary and through this article, we will revisit the principles he followed in his life and fought for freedom.

Mahatma Gandhi was born on 2 October 1869, in Porbandar, Gujarat. Initially a lawyer, Gandhi always felt nervous when asked to speak up in front of a large crowd in London where he went to study as a barrister. With years passing by his memorials concluded that the man had transformed from a quiet, shy barrister to India’s leading voice that had led the country to its freedom.

Gandhiji’s two main principles were peace and non-violence (Ahimsa). He has always been a follower of truth and non-violence. Seeing his struggle for achieving non-violence, UN General Assembly declared this day as International Day of Non-violence.

Gandhiji lived a life of simplicity and preached to his followers to keep things simple and not be attached to worldly pleasures. Despite being a world-renowned leader, he wore plain Khadi clothes that were made by himself at home on his charkha. He believed in equality for all and respected every individual and their thoughts.

He devoted his life relentlessly to spreading awareness about the importance of equality, peace, harmony, and brotherhood. He always opposed untouchability and worked for Hindu-Muslim unity. He believed in removing all social evils and believed in women’s empowerment. He was also concerned about farmers and worked hard to improve their economic condition.
