How To Prepare For NEET?

NEET is one of the toughest entrance exams to clear which students need to strive hard. They need to grab every chance to ace the exam with top ranks and secure a seat in a medical college of their choice. From attending top coaching classes to referring to recorded video lectures and other study material, students leave no stone unturned to get high rank in the medical entrance exam. But with all this hard work, candidates also need to have a clear NEET preparation strategy. Here are some NEET 2019 preparation tips to help you start your journey towards the achievement of your dream of becoming a doctor.

1. Understand NEET Exam Pattern

First and the most important preparation tip for NEET is to have a clear understanding of the exam pattern. NEET exam pattern helps you get an idea of the type of questions asked, the total duration of the exam, topics covered, marking scheme and other important details based on which you can plan your NEET preparation plan.

2. Check NEET syllabus

Next NEET preparation tip to get high scores in the exam is to go through the complete syllabus. From the subjects to the topics covered in them, you should carefully check the complete NEET syllabus. NEET syllabus is huge and to complete it in a limited time, you need to make an effective preparation plan. Having a thorough understanding of NEET syllabus will not just help you make an effective study plan but will also help you save precious time on subjects that can be covered quickly and easily. Based on the topics covered in the exam and your command on them, you can decide the areas that need more practice than others and can devote more time to them.

NEET Syllabus 2019

Physics – Mechanics, Optics, Thermodynamics and Nuclear Physics

Chemistry – Mole Concept, General Organic Chemistry, Periodic Table, Chemical Bonding, Coordination Chemistry

Biology – Ecology and Environment, Genetics, Cell Biology; Morphology, Reproduction, and Physiology of Plants and Animals; Basics of Biotechnology

3. Create a realistic study plan

Now when you are aware of NEET exam pattern and syllabus, this is the time to make an effective and result-oriented study plan. When making a study plan for NEET preparation, make sure that you utilize your time wisely and make an effective timetable. Set your goals, calculate the total time available with you for NEET 2019 preparation, check the resources and then make a schedule to study. Plan your weeks in advance by noting down the chapters who want to cover.

4. Choose the best NEET study material

Selection of the right study material is the key to success in the medical entrance exam. No matter how dedicatedly you prepare for the exam, if you don’t have access to the right study material, you can’t achieve your goal. Be it printed study material, videos, e-books or test series, make sure you get it from a reliable coaching institute. Consider taking help of your teachers or mentors when referring to additional study material than provided by your coaching institute.

Thankfully, in today’s digitized world you don’t need to rely only on NCERT books to complete NEET syllabus. To get better command on the concepts and to understand them quickly, you can attend live interactive classes or can also watch recorded video lectures. With a combination of visuals, graphs, and illustrations, videos make it easier for the students to grab and retain the information.

Check process to fill NEET Application form 2020

In addition to the NCERT books and recorded video lectures, you can also refer to the below-given books to cover NEET syllabus 2019.

Physics Chemistry Biology
Problems in General Physics by I.E. Irodov Modern Approach to Chemical Calculations – R. C. Mukherjee Objective NCERT at Your Fingertips for NEET
The Feynman Lectures on Physics Vol. I & Vol. II Organic Chemistry – MConcise Inorganic Chemistry – J. D. Leeorrison and Boyd

M.S. Chauhan

Books by T.L Rayar
Concepts of Physics Vol I and II by H.C. Verma Physical Chemistry for Medical Entrance by OP Tandon Trueman’s Elementary Biology Volume – I and Volume – II

5. Clear your concepts

One of the biggest reasons behind failure in NEET exam is unclear concepts. Students usually skip the topics when they are not able to get their doubts cleared. This is like taking a huge risk as you never know which section or topic will have how many questions.

If you have doubt in any section, make sure you go through the topic again and again until you master it. If you find it difficult to understand it by just reading it, take help of your teachers. Students, who feel shy to ask the questions in the classroom can download Aakash iTutor app and can ask their doubts direct from the experienced Aakash faculty in ‘Ask an Expert’ section.

6. Revise NEET Syllabus regularly

No matter how intelligent someone is, remembering the vast syllabus of NEET is almost impossible without regular revision. You should regularly revise the syllabus you cover. You can make a weekly, fortnightly or monthly revision plan to understand how well you are going with your study plan for NEET 2019 preparation.

Also check: NEET 2019 Revision Strategies for 3 Months

7. Solve NEET Test Series

Just cramming the concepts and going through the syllabus repeatedly won’t take you anywhere until you check your progress regularly. And one of the best ways to check how much you have learned is to solve NEET test series. If you feel that the test series provided by your coaching institute is not enough, you can buy NEET daily practice tests or mock tests online to regularly gauge your performance. It will also help you understand your problem areas based on which you can make required changes in your NEET preparation plan.

As NEET will be now an online exam, you also need to get ready for the revised pattern and this is possible only when you practice enough online tests. Solve as many online tests as you can to understand the process of CBT and make your strategies for the exam day. It will also help you boost your confidence.

8. Make notes

Going through complete books every time might not be possible for every student. And this is not even required when you have already gone through the syllabus and understood all the topics. Rather, you can make short notes to improve your memory skills. You can note down the important points, formula, and theorems in a separate notebook, which you can go through every day before sleeping. It will help you memorize the things for longer.

9. Work on weaker areas

Regular tests by the coaching institute help you understand the areas that need more practice and revision. At times students know about their weak areas, but still, waste a lot of time on revising the strong sections as they find them interesting. Take it as an important NEET 2019 preparation tip and ensure that you spend enough time on the weak areas to convert them into your strengths. You can watch videos, take help of your teachers or can discuss the concepts with the peers to understand the difficult sections.

10. Solve Mock tests and previous year’s NEET papers

Time is one of the biggest critical points when it comes to NEET. Students need to utilize every minute wisely to attempt 180 questions in 180 minutes. Logically, you get just one minute for each question and to ensure that you attempt the maximum number of questions in the given time, you really need to work hard on your speed. Taking mock tests is one of the best ways to boost your speed.

You should solve NEET mock tests and previous year papers. Apart from improving your speed, this also helps you understand the real environment of the examination hall, question paper pattern, previous year’s trends and the type of questions asked in the exam. Based on your performance in the mock tests, you can plan your strategies to wisely attempt questions in the real exam. To gain maximum benefit from NEET previous year papers and mock tests, create real examination hall like environment at your home, set a timer and solve the questions.

Once you are done with the test, check your performance and analyse it properly with the help of the reports provided by the institute. You can also talk to your teacher to get their feedback and work on the suggestion given by them.

11. Avoid common mistakes

Sometimes students fail to crack NEET due to some common mistakes. Having knowledge of the common mistakes made by NEET students helps you improve your chances of scoring top rank in the exam. Here are the mistakes you need to avoid to ensure your success in NEET 2019:

  • Not following the timetable
  • Not making realistic goals
  • Referring to more than required study material
  • Skipping topics
  • Not taking enough mock tests
  • Ignoring health

12. Focus on your health

Clearing NEET exam in one attempt is to be sure the dream of every aspirant but not at the cost of your health. You will be able to perform well in the exam only when you are healthy. Make a timetable that includes enough breaks and relaxation time. You should also focus on your diet and eat healthy food. Get complete sleep as it not just makes you feel fresh and energetic but also helps you improve your concentration power. Make sure you give your brain enough time to relax, which is possible only by taking short breaks and following a regular sleep cycle.

13. Subject Wise NEET Preparation Tips

  • NEET Preparation Tips for Physics

Understand the basic concepts given in the NCERT books to start with NEET preparation for Physics. It will not just help you prepare for your board exams but will also help you strengthen your basic concepts. Once you are done with the NCERT books, you can refer other books or videos for advanced topics covered in the syllabus of NEET.

  • NEET Preparation Tips for Chemistry

Chemistry is more about theoretical concepts, chemical equations, and problems, which you should prepare by going through NCERT books and other study material created by experienced faculty. So, don’t forget to make notes of different equations to revise them regularly. You can also watch recorded video lectures on Inorganic, Organic and Physical chemistry.

  • NEET Preparation Tips for Biology

This is the most important subject for the candidates aspiring to take admission to MBBS and BDS courses. Further, Biology is given more weightage in NEET question paper than Chemistry and Physics. Hence, you need to be very clear with different questions to attempt questions in the exam. And this is possible only with a regular revision of the subject with practice tests.

These are some helpful and easy-to-follow NEET preparation tips every aspirant dreaming to clear medical entrance exam must follow. These preparation tips for NEET 2019 will help you score a good All India Rank (AIR) to get admission to one of the top medical colleges in India.
