If you aspire to pursue engineering from one of the IITs or NITs, taking JEE Main becomes mandatory for you. With the syllabus so vast and competition so stiff, JEE undeniably is one of the toughest exams to crack. You seek preparation tips, strategies, good coaching and the right mentoring; but most importantly, you need to stay motivated.

What better way to do that than to get the best tips and strategies from toppers and rankers of JEE?

With just a few days remaining for JEE Main 2019 second session in April, here are a few lessons to give you that extra edge to ace the engineering entrance exam.

Understand the syllabus and the question paper pattern

“If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail”. Your preparation will never be complete if it’s not planned right. So, before you start your preparation, completely understand the syllabus and the pattern of the question papers. Post that, you need to make a plan keeping in mind all the practical possibilities of completing it, and then start your preparation.

To help you with, here’s the paper pattern for JEE Main 2019:

    Subject Total Questions Total Marks
    Physics 30 120
    Chemistry 30 120
    Maths 30 120
    Grand Total 90 360

    Know the syllabus:

Analyse the difficulty level of previous years question papers

Toppers suggest that it is important you get an insight into the difficulty level of the previous year JEE Mains paper with the help of paper analysis. This will help you prepare for the exam better.

Make a timetable and give equal time to each subject

Without a timetable and the right time management practice, it will be very difficult for you to reach your goals. There is a major difference between sitting with books for 14 hours a day and actually studying them for 14 hours. Just how the toppers do, you’ll have to put your time to good use. As per your learning capacity, make a timetable and follow it sincerely.

Complete the most important tasks first, and don’t procrastinate and aim for incremental improvement. Set s time duration for everything you do and turn important tasks into habits.

Focus more on the important topics and revise them more often

The entire syllabus of JEE Main 2019 is important and must be thoroughly studied. However, there are certain topics you must focus more on and revise more often, as suggested by previous year toppers. Questions from these topics are frequently asked in JEE Main. Some of them are:

    Physics

    • Magnetics- The topic from which maximum questions are asked at JEE Main.
    • Modern Physics- Highly important topic for both JEE Main & Advanced. Check these sub-topics – nuclear fission and fusion, radioactive decay of substances, dual nature of matter and X-rays in detail.
    • Optics- Relatively easy topic to study.
    • Electromagnetic Induction & AC- Expect numerical problems from this topic to come up in the exam.
    • Oscillation and Waves- An important topic that should be studied in detail.
    • Current Electricity- Cover important topics like Ohm’s law and Colour Code for Resistors as questions are asked from these.
    • Electrostatics- The most scoring topic for you. Around 4 questions are asked from this section every year.

    Chemistry

    • Organic Chemistry-Purification and Characterisation of Organic Compounds, Organic Compounds Containing Oxygen, Some Basic Principles of Organic Chemistry, Organic Compounds Containing Nitrogen, BioMolecules, Hydrocarbons.
    • Inorganic Chemistry- General Principles and Process of Isolation of Metals, Hydrogen, s – Block Elements (Alkali and Alkaline Earth Metals), Classification of Elements and Periodicity in Properties, Co-ordination Compounds, Environmental Chemistry.
    • Physical Chemistry- States of Matter, Atomic Structure, Chemical Bonding and Molecular Structure, Some Basic concepts in Chemistry, Chemical Thermodynamics, Surface Chemistry, Equilibrium, Chemical Kinetics, Redox Reactions and Electrochemistry.

    Maths

    • Permutations & Combinations
    • Definite Integration
    • Quadratic Equation
    • Determinants
    • Application of Derivatives
    • Conic Section
    • Differential Equation
    • Probability
    • Vector & 3D Geometry
    • Complex Numbers
    • Functions, limits, Continuity & Differentiability
    • Sequences engineers
    • Calculus; Definite Integral in Calculus
    • Coordinate Geometry; Matrices in Algebra: Circle, Parabola, Hyperbola in Coordinate Geometry

Choose the right study materials and sources

The toppers did not pick multiple books to prepare for JEE Main. Instead, they made smart choices and stuck to the ones most reliable. One thing many toppers majorly banked on is a reliable digital learning platform that let them prepare for the exam from wherever you want. Get that edge with Aakash Digital. It brings home the same discipline and rigour of classroom coaching with live online classes and recorded video lectures of experts. By getting the same quality of education at home, you can cut out the commute and use that time for preparation and revision. The teaching faculty solves all your doubts through live interactive classes. If you still have doubts, you can clear them through a phone call, attend special doubt clarification sessions or send a mail with your question.

Practicing with online mock tests is the key

The most important thing to remember is that JEE Main 2019 will be conducted online; hence understanding the structure will be of utmost importance. It will familiarise you with the exam pattern and help you manage your time well, enabling you to score the right numbers.

Like many top rankers from previous years, you should start practising with online tests. Regularly practice, analyse and improve your performance with practice tests, mock tests, and previous year papers. The experienced Aakash faculty provides detailed performance analysis reports after completion of tests. These reports help you find out the areas that need more practice to perform well in the final exam. Not just your personal performance, with All India Aakash Test Series (AIATS) by Aakash PracTest you can also check your rank at an all India level by competing with lakhs of students taking the test from across the country.

Good health possesses a good mind

A crucial factor is maintaining good health while preparing for the exam. If you stay healthy and maintain a routine throughout the preparation period for JEE Main, then you can expect a good rank. Eat healthily and sleep enough. Take proper breaks and don’t extend your study sessions beyond your capacity. It will only make you tired and less efficient. Take out 30 – 45 minutes from your schedule to do some light exercise or play some games. This will rejuvenate your mind and keep you active.

Finally, a few words from the toppers

To help you with, what could be better than a few helpful tips from the toppers themselves? Here’s what the top rankers have to say:

KVR Hemant Kumar Chodipilli, AIR 2, JEE Main 2018 – “To crack JEE Main, you have to remain positive and confident throughout the preparation period. There will be times when you may face difficulty in understanding concepts, but you must try to remain calm and try with renewed determination to understand the concepts without skipping them. Try to interact with the faculty for guidance. Be patient, work hard.”

Parth Satish Laturia, AIR 3, JEE Main 2018 – “If you are aiming to crack JEE Main, you must manage your time well, work hard, remain positive and should not lose hope at any stage of preparation. There may be times when you might not be performing well in the mock tests. It is at that time that you should not lose hope. If you have any doubts, then please clear them by referring to experts. Try to remain relaxed, take proper rest and eat well.”

Pranav Goyal, AIR 4, JEE Main 2018 – “Remain focused. Mere hard work will not yield the desired result if you are not focused.”

It is not an unachievable task to crack JEE Main 2019. With the right attitude, preparation strategy and practice, you can always make it through and kick start your career on a high note. Good luck!
