Importance of Light in our Lives
Light is a crucial aspect of life on Earth. Light is essential to science, culture, art, education, and sustainable development. Light unites our increasingly globalized society through the internet with fiber optic cables, powers modern medical technologies, and joins your phone with integrated circuits. Maintaining awareness of the remarkable power of light is vital if we are to continue the life-altering innovations that have allowed humankind to progress in the modern age.
History of International Light Day
In 2013, it was declared by the United Nations that 2015 would be the “International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies”. A year-long celebration pointing to bring worldwide attention to light science and how it can improve the lives of people and develop society. With a large number of events organized around the world and hundreds of partners and partnerships, it proved to be successful. To continue with this successful work, an annual International Day of Light now takes place each year, on 16th May.
The International Day of Light is a global initiative that provides an annual focus for the continued appreciation of light and the role it plays in science, culture and art, education, and sustainable development, and in fields as diverse as medicine, communications, and energy.
