During the recent cabinet meeting convened on November 16, the Assam government unveiled a pivotal educational reform – the consolidation of Class 10 and Class 12 boards into a unified entity named the Assam State School Education Board (ASSEB). Formerly distinct as the Board of Secondary Education Assam (SEBA) for Class 10 and the Assam Higher Secondary Education Council (AHSEC) for Class 12, the amalgamation into ASSEB signifies a significant structural shift.
The initial proposal for this consolidation was introduced in June 2023, and its formal approval aligns with the government’s commitment to enhancing the oversight, regulation, and overall quality of school education. This transformative decision was articulated in an official statement released following the cabinet meeting.
Simultaneously, the government has taken strides to streamline the recruitment process for graduate and postgraduate teachers. The Assam Secondary Education (Government Schools) Service (2nd Amendment) Rules, 2023, and the Assam Secondary Education (Provincialised Schools) Service (2nd Amendment) Rules, 2023 have received the green light.
The objective behind these amendments is to optimize the utilization of manpower, fostering effective academic support for students. This initiative aims to prevent any adverse impact on academic activities at the secondary level in provincialized and government schools. The comprehensive approach underscores the government’s commitment to fostering a conducive and efficient educational environment in the state.
