1. Follow the OK4R textbook methodology
OK4R stands for Overview, Key Ideas, Reading, Recall, Reflect, and Review. Following this 6-part strategy will prove to be extremely beneficial for students who need to read textbook chapters for preparation. For instance, if you are looking to tackle the chemistry chapter ‘The P block elements’, begin with the overview of the chapter. Then move on to the key topics highlighted, post which you should commence a thorough reading of the text.
Once that is done, recall what you have read, reflect on what you have learned, and then review your knowledge. Following this process will certainly help you retain more of what you learn.
2. Work in shorter sessions
Rather than stressing out your body and mind over long-drawn-out study sessions, try and study in small time intervals, with breaks in between. It will be more effective if you study for 3 intervals of one hour each, with a 15-minute break in between intervals, rather than sitting for 3 hours straight. After a certain period of time, your mind gets tired and is unable to absorb any more knowledge. Give it time to refresh, and watch how it becomes your best friend!
3. Try studying in the morning
Studying at odd times, such as late at the night, can prove to be more disastrous than beneficial. If you force yourself to study when you are lazy or exhausted, it will be of no use. Instead, try studying in the early morning hours, by getting enough sleep at night and waking up at 5 or 6 in the morning. You could also try going for a small walk before studying to refresh your mind and unravel the beauty of nature in these morning hours.
4. Go for smart work, not just hard work
A combination of both smart work and hard work is what is needed to ace any competitive exam. For instance, get rid of the notion that more study time equals better preparation. If you can cover in an hour what other students cover in 2 hours, because of your smart learning strategies, then why would you consider being less prepared? Judging your preparation by time just doesn’t work out anymore.
5. Make the right use of technology
Technology like mobile phones are not always harmful or a distraction in your NEET or JEE preparation. Use mobile phones to revise concepts by watching videos. You can also download games like Lumosity, Hidden Folks etc. to work on your memory, speed, concentration and decision making skills.
Follow these learning strategies and watch how your scores skyrocket in NEET/JEE or 12th Boards or any other competitive exam you are preparing for.
