History of IIT
Indian Institute of Technology is a top network for Engineering and technological colleges across the country. This network was first established in the 1950s by the Ministry of Education and Government of India. This institute was governed by the Institute of Technology Act, 1961.
Till now 23 IITs have been established in different states of the country. Each branch of IITs is connected to the IIT Council that helps the administration. In history, Nalini Ranjan Sarkar, identified the need and recommended the establishment of such institutions with the idea of MITs (Massachusetts Institute of Technology). The first IIT was established in 1950 and was named Indian Institute of Technology before 1951.
With time four new campuses (Bombay, Madras, Kanpur, and Delhi) were established between (1958-1961) by the Sarkar Committee.
From 2008 to 2009, eight new IITs were set up and after 2015 between (2015-2016) six new IITs were set up. In June 202, Tanzania announced the first international IIT setup as a satellite campus of Madras.
