In early 1960s, the Government of India established more than 15 Regional Engineering Colleges to provide Engineering courses in India. Later in the early 2000s, these institutions were renamed as NITs (National Institute of Technology). With time, more NITs were added to the list of NITs in India. To this date, there are a total of 31 NITs all across the country.
NIT Silchar is one of the 31 NITs across the country. NIT Silchar was earlier known as Regional Engineering College, Assam. It was established in the year 1967 from the association of Government of India and State Government of Assam. Later, in 2002, it was renamed as NIT under the NIT Bill being passed by the Government of India.
