Aspiring doctors, which specialisation are you aiming for? Here is a list of popular medical fields to help you make the right decision for your career:
1) Oncology – Oncology department deals with cancer. From diagnosis to medication to treatment of a cancer patient, all of this is covered by the Oncology department. There are 3 types of oncologist’s i.e. Medical, surgical and radiation. They work together for the treatment of a cancer patient.
2) Cardiology – Cardiology includes everything that is related to heart. It involves heart defects, coronary artery disease, heart failure, valvar heart disease and electrophysiology. Cardiologists cannot perform surgery on the heart. For the surgery of the heart cardiac surgeons, cardiothoracic and cardiovascular surgeons exist who perform these crucial surgeries on the heart & vessels through open operative procedures.
3) Orthopaedics – Orthopedists or orthopaedic surgeons take care of the muscles and bones in the human body. It is a branch of surgery which focuses on musculoskeletal system (muscles and bones). They use surgical and non – surgical ways to treat musculoskeletal trauma, sports injuries, infections, tumors, congenital disorder and degenerative diseases.
4) Neurology – This department is concerned with the function of the brain, nerves, muscles and spinal cord. It is a highly crucial department as it works with the most important part of the human body. Neurologists are often involved in clinical research and trials to find cures for untreatable diseases like Alzheimer’s. Since the nervous system is complicated, this field has developed sub-specialities which include, epilepsy, stroke, multiple sclerosis and movement disorders.
5) Radiology – This department deals with imaging technology. It has been divided into various sub-specialities like neuro-radiology, paediatric radiology, vascular & interventional radiology. Radiologists use x-ray, computed tomography (CT), ultrasound, electromagnetic radiation and other image-guided intervention while treating diseases.
6) Emergency Medicine – This department includes the treatment of the patients who require immediate medical attention. It comprises mainly of general medicine and surgery. In India, Emergency Medicine has been recognized as a separate specialty by Medical Council of India (MCI).
7) Obstetrics / Gynaecology – Obstetrics is the treatment of women during pregnancy which includes pre-natal care. Gynaecology is the speciality which involves treating and taking care of the well-being of the female reproductive organs. Since these fields are closely related, sometimes they are practiced together. They perform caesarean operations, laparoscopies and hysterectomy. They also deal with ovarian cancer and any other problems related to the reproductive systems.
8) Paediatrics – This speciality only focuses on managing the medical conditions which affect infants, children and young adults. They deal with a wide range of health services which includes preventive health care. They have sub-specialities like oncology, rheumatology, nephrology, neurology etc.
