Competitive exams like NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test) put immense pressure on the students as they try their best to do well in the exam, and it is understandable as it is one of the most coveted entrance examinations of India that grants students admission to the most prestigious government and private medical colleges across the country. No matter how much pressure they face, students need to stay calm to focus on their studies and yield better results.

Chemistry is a compulsory subject for the NEET 2022 Exam, along with Physics and Biology. It is a high-yielding subject and, if prepared well, can help the student to increase his overall score to a great extent. This discussion focuses on the tips and strategies you can apply to score high marks in the NEET Chemistry exam that will increase your overall score and help you crack the exam.

NEET Chemistry consists of three main parts— Physical, Organic, and Inorganic Chemistry. The NEET question paper carries 45 from Chemistry which amounts to 180 marks. There are 29 chapters in total in NEET Chemistry Syllabus.

While preparing for the NEET Chemistry 2022 exam, please pay due attention to all the parts of the chemical reactions, such as the reactants, products, temperature and pressure conditions, and the catalysts. Such time fact-based details are often asked in the exam in the form of multiple-choice questions, so you should be adequately prepared to face such questions. While making notes, you should write such volatile information separately on a sheet of paper to revise them just before the exam and confidently answer any questions that might be asked based on them.

Tips For memorising chemical reactions for NEET Chemistry 2022 Exam

    Start studying the reactions early:

The best tip you can use for preparing the reactions and remembering them well is to start studying them early. When you start early, you know that you have a lot of time left to finish the syllabus. Your brain is calm and receptive to learning. You get a chance to clear all your concepts comprehensively without rushing through the syllabus. Moreover, you will finish the NEET Syllabus well before time and have enough time left to revise the reactions and solve sample questions related to them. All this will help you feel more confident in your preparation, and you will crack the exam with great ranks.

    Learn the basics:

    • Keeping the basic concepts in the first place, you should be acquainted with all the symbols of elements. First, try to understand the reaction. Once you get a hold over it, then go for its reactants. In the end move to their products formed in the reaction.. Then try to balance the number of atoms of each type on the reactant side with those on the product side.
    • Organic chemistry can be quite challenging due to the presence of a vast number of compounds. The silver lining on the cloud is that you can form groups of all these compounds based on their structure. Its structure decides the properties of a compound. It helps us determine which reactions are possible and which are not.
    • Understand how to draw structures of compounds based on their names and how to identify the number of bonds and hybridisation of different atoms. In benzene, draw lines for better clarity instead of atoms. Are you familiar with all the atoms in such a diagram? It also shows which part of an organic compound will be most active in reactions. Learn them properly to master organic chemistry.

    Learn all the functional groups:

Please learn the IUPAC nomenclature rules by heart. This will enable you to name the compounds accurately. You need to be able to name a compound from its given formula.

    Stick them on your wall:

Take a piece of paper and write down all the important reactions you tend to forget. Stick these papers on your almirah, study table or on the door. Whenever you pass by that spot, please read them over. If you follow this tip, we guarantee that you will know them like a pro over a few months!

Strategy for memorising Organic Chemistry reactions that you find hard:

    • Try to understand the reactions’ mechanisms before practising them on your own.
    • Please make a list of all the reactions and their mechanisms in a separate paper in the form of notes. You can find all the important reactions in your NCERT Solutions for Class 11 Chemistry and NCERT Solutions for Class 12 Chemistry textbooks. You can also make note cards or flashcards to memorise reactions (with examples and mechanisms).
    • Now, once you are comfortable with the mechanism, start practising the reactions by writing them a minimum of five times every day
    • You can draw the reactions in the form of flow charts on sheets of paper. Please have a look at them every day so that the chart gets memorised easily
    • Keep thinking of reactions and mechanisms you studied in your free time. And after a month or so, practice them all by writing them down without seeing them every alternate day.

For the organic chemistry’s conversion reactions:

    • You have to understand the basic reactions’ mechanisms.
    • There are certain mechanisms behind each particular reaction, and they are somehow related to each other.
    • Suppose, if one has understood the types of nucleophilic substitution reactions SN1 and SN2, then any substitution with any reactant can be tackled.
    • Please remember the simple steps of preparation of compounds and the basic name reactions like aldol reaction.

Practise the equations of the product so formed

After that study the reactants from the products. It would help if you learned both the conditions so that you can attempt it easily at any step of conversion. You don’t need to learn equations (reactants and products) by heart. You will never be able to remember them anyway. Just try to understand the basic concepts behind them.

Avoid memorisation until there is no other option left:

Memorisation is a poor strategy that students resort to when they haven’t planned ahead sufficiently and have to cram the night before an exam. However, certain parts of the course require memorisation– like nomenclature terms, reagent names and acronyms, functional groups, and so on. Some students might have to resort to flashcards or other memory-centred devices to remember such course material. It is ok to do that, as long as it is combined with a dedication toward understanding the fundamental concepts.

    Revision:

As soon as you are done with the syllabus, please revise whatever you have studied, including the reactions. More often than not, you might have faced situations where you study a topic, and when you try to recall the concepts after a few days, you feel blank. With the pressure of retaining a huge amount of information in your brain, it is natural to fall prey to such situations. The only solution to get out of those is to make adequate revisions. Revising the concepts you have studied reinforces those deep into the brain by storing those in the form of long-term memory in the brain’s memory hub called the hippocampus. After this happens, the information is less susceptible to being forgotten and recalling it gets much easier.

Things to avoid while preparing for NEET 2022 Chemistry

    • Please do not get distracted by multiple study sources: With many books available in the market for NEET 2022 preparation, it is common for students to buy a lot of them and attempt to derive information from them all. This creates chaos and confusion, and the student ends up feeling overwhelmed, not being able to complete one source fully, leave alone get time for revisions. Please stick to your coaching centre’s academic material and the NCERT textbooks. You can choose a good quality reference book to clear some concepts but do not refer to multiple books.
    • Do not forget to practise questions: As you all know, NEET 2022 is a multiple-choice based paper. So, no matter how many times you study the theory part, if you do not practise questions related to it, you will feel clueless in the exam. The questions will look unfamiliar, and you won’t know how to approach them. Even if the questions look familiar, you wouldn’t know how to apply your knowledge and concepts to solve them, which will decrease your overall score. Therefore, it is very important to solve as many exam pattern questions as possible to do well in the NEET UG 2022 exam.
    • Do not start attending the mock tests too early: Many students start solving the mock tests too early in their preparation. The result is that they score too less on the mock tests, which makes them feel hopeless and brings down their confidence level. Moreover, they feel discouraged to continue giving more mock tests. Therefore, it is advisable to start giving mock tests when you have completed at least 70% of the syllabus. When you do so, most of the questions in the mock tests will be familiar to you, and you will be able to score well. That will increase your overall confidence and give you hope that you can ace the main exam as well. Moreover, you will also get acquainted with your weak points or any concepts you might have missed while studying.

    Conclusion

We are sure that you will be determined to memorise the hard-to-remember Chemistry reactions with new strategies at the end of the discussion. Please remember that nothing is hard if you put your heart and soul into learning it.

    FAQs

    1. Why is making your own notes important?

Making your own notes is a very important part of solid exam preparation. It helps you in two ways. When you make notes, you pay attention to every word that the teacher utters, so you are actively learning the concepts. And then, you have a copy of the notes you can use for future referrals. When you revisit your notes at a later date, they remind you of the lecture and help you recall all the details regarding the concepts. They also help you recall any shortcuts or mnemonics that the teacher might have mentioned in the class to make memorisation easier. While making notes, please make sure that you write everything accurately and in an organised manner. If your notes are not clear and you cannot comprehend those later, all your hard work in making and maintaining them will go to waste.

    2. Why is solving previous year’s papers important for NEET preparation?

If you want to score high in the NEET 2022 Chemistry exam, you must solve the NEET Previous Year Question Papers. Failing to do so will make you miss some questions in the exam that you could have attempted otherwise. When you solve the previous year’s questions of any exam, you get acquainted with the examiner’s style of asking the questions, which helps you to prepare to keep in view the exam pattern. Moreover, you get to know the important parts of the syllabus or the parts you need to focus on more than others.

    3. Why is attending mock tests important?

If you go for a competitive exam without attending any mock tests, you are doing it wrong. Mock tests are simulating exams that copy the conditions of the main exam in terms of the paper pattern, duration, and difficulty level. Wondering what the best way to use a mock test to your advantage is? After you are done with it, analyse the paper, point out your mistakes, note them down, go back to your notes and read the topics related to those once again. Doing this will minimise the chances of repeating those mistakes in the main exam. It is better to acknowledge your mistakes and rectify them before the exam than commit those in the main exam. If you want an access to good quality NEET Mock Tests 2022, please check NEET Mock Tests.
