The Pradhan Mantri Innovative Learning Programme – DHRUV was started by Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India to identify and encourage talented children to enrich their skills and knowledge. 60 outstandingly talented students were selected for the first batch of DHRUV programme. 2 out of these students were Aakashians, Chirag Falor and Abhinav Barnawal respectively.

Chirag Falor, our classroom student, was selected for the first batch of Dhruv Programme. Read further to know more about Chirag’s 14 days experience in his own words and how it added value to his life and career perspective.

I was one of the 60 students that were selected for DHRUV, the Pradhan Mantri Innovative Learning Programme, at ISRO headquarters. After winning the Gold Medal in the International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA) and scoring All India Rank 3 in Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY), I was selected for DHRUV.

The training period was the most crucial part of the programme. We stayed at the National Bal Bhavan and were mentored at the IIT Delhi. The professors and Ph.D. students at IIT Delhi guided us throughout the programme and solved our queries. Further, we got to meet many distinguished guests during the programme from whom we learnt about different and interesting topics.

During the programme, all of us were given projects. For that, we were split into many groups. Each group was assigned a different topic. My group had to prepare a project on Nanotechnology. All of us in the group were quite excited. After brainstorming our ideas and taking help of our mentors, we made a nano DHRUV logo. In addition, I was also a part of the group for climate modelling. In this project we ran many models on a computer to predict the temperature of the future world. The project helped us understand the different perspectives of climate change and how to tackle it differently.

For each project that was assigned to us, we used to brainstorm our ideas first and then developed it with the help of our mentors.

Once our projects were ready, we presented them to the Vice President of India.

The atmosphere at the training programme was full of joy and innovation. Every day we used to wake up at 7 am. After breakfast, we used to leave for IIT by bus where we used to attend lectures on specific topics. Post lunch, we used to have brainstorming sessions which were very enlightening.

We used to discuss varied topics that helped us gain so much knowledge. The bus trips used to be full of fun and learning. Even our stay at Bal Bhavan was quite exciting as we used to play many games among ourselves and did many other recreational activities.

Students from across the nation were selected for this programme which resulted in greater learning experience. The Science Group learned many new things from the Arts Group. This sharing of ideas helped us to understand the different thought process of different people. We also made so many new friends and shared our talents. I met so many brilliant students and which I believe is an achievement in itself.

According to me, the best thing about the whole programme was how well they integrated different talents to a common goal especially the way we all worked together on the climate change project to solve the problem. It was so amazing to meet different people from the science realm who shared their perspective with us and various personalities from the arts field who interacted with us on different occasions. All this made the whole program exciting enough to be memorable for life.

I truly believe that in all respects, it was a very inspiring programme that integrated the brightest minds of India to develop a project, which would be helpful to the environment.

This programme has been a great learning experience as I know so many new things now such as the steps of fabrication of nano-scale devices, which would be useful in various fields. I also got an opportunity to meet gifted students from performing arts which provided with an entirely new perspective. Interaction with different talented students from all over India was, according to me, the most valuable element about DHRUV. I miss my friends and, definitely, the programme.

Going forward, I plan to pursue research after completing my higher studies in pure sciences and doing a Ph.D. The skills I have learned in this programme would be useful in my upcoming endeavours.

Thank You

Chirag Falor
