According to the latest CBSE marking scheme, Class X Biology section (i.e. World of Living and Natural Resources) carries a weightage of approximately 27 marks. The syllabus aims at emphasizing the underlying principles that are common to both animals and plants as well as highlighting the relationship of Biology with other areas of knowledge.
PREPARATION TIPS FOR BIOLOGY SECTION
-
Target syllabus as per weightage of chapters
Out of the six mentioned chapters, the first four chapters have maximum weightage according to the marking scheme provided by CBSE. You should, thus, focus on covering these high scoring chapters on priority basis to score well in the biology section.
-
Focus on diagrams and conceptual problems
Diagrams are vital to score well in Biology section. Concentrate on diagrams like human alimentary canal, the human heart, reproductive systems, etc. and practice these in a neat and well labelled manner. Also, conceptual problems should be tackled with extreme care. For example, in case of conceptual problems asked from chapter ‘Heredity and Evolution’, questions on Mendelian crosses can be easily explained through Punnett squares rather than attempting theoretically.
-
Mastering NCERT is the key!
Since Board exams are based on NCERT textbooks, every question provided in the NCERT textbook should be practised thoroughly even for Pre-Boards. Do not miss out on the activities and the information given in tabular form as questions can be asked based on these as well.
-
Solve sample papers & previous year questions
Solve as many sample papers as you can to hone your Class X Biology section. Practice questions asked in previous years. Ensure that you take these tests in conditions similar to an actual Pre-Board exam i.e. finish taking the test within the stipulated time and also write your answers according to the CBSE marking scheme.
The previous years’ question papers from the last 5 to 6 years will give you a fair idea of the kind of questions that are asked. However, do remember the changes that have been incorporated from this year onward. 10 MCQs will be asked in Science paper, along with a few Assertion-Reason based questions.
-
Revise thoroughly and consistently
Consistent Revision is a must. It will help you remember and recall the vast information at the time of exam.
To enhance your revision, ensure that the lengthy content of chapters is summarized well with the help of flowcharts of various topics for clear understanding and quick recap.
In case, you fret that your syllabus won’t be finished in time, then first target the most important and difficult topics that carry more marks. Focus on your strong areas and devote maximum time to its practice.
-
Manage time efficiently while revising
For effective and wise revision plan, make short notes of important topics related to lengthy chapters like ‘Life Processes’ and ‘Control and Coordination’ to speed up your preparation.
Moreover, rather than writing long exhaustive answers in Class X Biology, write accurate, precise and to the point answers according to the marking scheme, so that all the questions can be finished in the given time.
Remember, concentrating on covering your entire course material is vital than losing sleep over what your results would be. So, target maximum preparation and maximum revision. In the words of revered Dr. A.P.J Kalam, “You cannot change your future, but you can change your habits, and surely your habits will change your future”.
