We all have dreams. And the excitement of a dream coming true is beyond imagination. Manogya Singh Suryansh, a student of Aakash IIT-JEE, is one of the 60 students that were selected by ISRO to watch the landing of Chandrayaan-2 Live with Honourable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. Here is an insight into what Manogya experienced during this great opportunity in his own words.

Since I was a child, space and technology always fascinated me. To be selected by ISRO to watch the landing of Chandrayaan-2 live was like a dream come true. On the evening of September 6, we departed for the ISRO Space Centre. Everyone looked very excited. We were all discussing about the centre and how amazing it would be. When we reached the centre, we were totally spellbound. It was such a grand place. Everything about it was so admirable and awe-inspiring. We could spot massive telescopes there. Once we were settled, ISRO Chairman, Mr K Sivan came to meet us. We had a brief interaction with him. He talked about Chandrayaan-2 and other future projects. It evoked a feeling of pride in all of us to know how hard our scientists work for the nation. We also got an opportunity to interact with other distinguished scientists. It was quite a learning experience as we could gain an insight into the world of space and technology.

We were all seated in Mission Complex to watch Chandrayaan-2 Landing. We could witness the Vikram Descent Trajectory on the graph that showed the flight data. The great event began around 1:30 am on the morning of September 7. Everyone was super excited and cheerful. Our honourable Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi looked very intrigued as ISRO Chairman, Mr K Sivan interacted with him. Phase-1 was the Rough Braking End. Initially, it all looked absolutely fine. All the scientists cheered and clapped as the landing procedure started and the Vikram Lander entered Phase-2 of Fine Braking Phase. However, there was some deviation when the scientists lost contact with the Vikram Lander.  All the scientists started making their calculations and analyzed the data. There was a little unrest before the landing. This unrest could be seen on everyone’s face. Soon the atmosphere turned quite tensed as everyone awaited a successful landing. Though the Vikram descent was as planned, the scientists lost all communication with the Lander. It was a heartbreaking moment. Everyone present there looked very sad. K Sivan Sir broke down as he communicated the news to honourable Prime Minister Modi Sir. However, Modi Sir held him tight and consoled him. He encouraged him and all others. He said we should be courageous. He was proud of all the scientists and the efforts they have put in. He congratulated everyone for serving science, humankind and the nation. He personally interacted with all of us, boosted our morale and answered our questions. We took his autograph and had a group photograph with him. Our interaction with him revealed how hard he works for the nation and barely sleeps. I also want to be like him when I grow up.

I feel very proud to be an Indian. I feel very proud of our scientists who are so selfless, dedicated and hard working. This whole experience taught me that success lies in failure also. Failure does not necessarily mean a setback. We should not be afraid of failing. In fact, when we fail, we should learn enough from it and move on with even stronger determination.

    Thank You

    Manogya Singh Suryansh
