With borders opening in full swing after the Covid-19, the number of female applicants who have applied for higher education abroad has seen a drastic increase. In comparison to the numbers in the pre-pandemic years, this number has seen a 100 to 150 percent increase. This number is expected to increase even more. This upward trend indicates a positive shift towards more women pursuing higher education opportunities in foreign countries. The rise in the number of female applicants demonstrates the growing recognition of the importance of women’s empowerment and gender equality in education. It also highlights the increasing accessibility and availability of study abroad programs for female students, as well as the changing societal norms and attitudes towards women’s education and career aspirations. This trend is encouraging and contributes to the global effort to promote diversity and inclusivity in higher education.
As per reports, it is seen that the male-to-female student ratio for admissions abroad has improved. The ratio for 2022 stands at 50:50 as compared to 70:30 in 2019. In tier 2 and 3 cities, the ratio has improved to 55:45 as compared to 80:20 in 2019. The number of female candidates has increased for destinations like the US, the UK, and other parts of Europe.
Another biggest reason for more women traveling abroad is that due to the mindsets of Indians opening up, many families are encouraging and supporting their daughters to study abroad and experience the world outside.
Factors Leading More Women to Study Abroad
The factors contributing to this trend are diverse and may include:
Empowerment and Gender Equality:
With the progress made in gender equality and the empowerment of women in many societies, more women now have the opportunity to pursue their educational goals and ambitions abroad.
Expanding Career Opportunities:
Many fields and industries are becoming increasingly globalized, leading to greater demand for professionals with international exposure and qualifications. Female students recognize the potential career benefits of studying abroad, such as enhanced job prospects and access to a wider range of opportunities.
Supportive Educational Policies and Initiatives:
Some countries and educational institutions have implemented policies and initiatives to encourage and support female students in pursuing education abroad. Scholarships, grants, and specific programs targeted at empowering women in education can contribute to the increase in female applicants.
Changing Societal Attitudes:
There has been a shift in societal attitudes towards women’s education, with greater recognition of the value and importance of providing equal opportunities for female students. Families and communities are increasingly supportive of female students pursuing education abroad, which encourages more women to consider this option.
Access to Information and Technology:
The widespread availability of information and advancements in technology have made it easier for female students to explore and access educational opportunities abroad. Online resources, social media platforms, and increased connectivity have played a significant role in disseminating information and connecting aspiring female students with relevant institutions and programs.
Personal Development and Cultural Exposure:
Studying abroad offers not only academic benefits but also personal growth and cultural exposure. Female students are increasingly seeking opportunities to broaden their horizons, develop independence, and experience diverse cultures and perspectives.
It is important to note that these trends may vary across different regions and countries. However, the overall increase in the number of female students applying for education abroad signifies a positive trend towards greater gender parity and the recognition of the immense potential of women in the global educational landscape.
