NEET 2023 Counselling Process Explained: From Registration to Seat Allotment

The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) is a highly competitive examination conducted in India for admission to undergraduate medical and dental courses in various government and private institutions. Once the NEET results are declared, the next crucial step for aspiring medical students is the counselling process. NEET Counselling 2023: Eligibility criteria

• Candidates who will qualify for the NEET will be eligible to apply for NEET 2023 counselling.
• Jammu and Kashmir candidates will not be able to participate in All India NEET counselling.
• Those who will register for NEET 2023 counselling on the MCC website can take part in the counselling process. 
• The AIQ counselling for Deemed Universities will be open to all NEET-qualified candidates.

NEET 2023 Counselling Process

NEET Counselling Registration

After the announcement of NEET results, the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) and respective state counselling authorities release the counselling schedule and registration details. Candidates must register themselves on the official website of MCC or state counselling authorities to participate in the counselling process. During registration, students need to provide their personal and academic details, as well as the choices of colleges and courses they are interested in.

Choice Filling and Locking

After successful registration, candidates are required to exercise their choice filling options. They can select their preferred colleges and courses from the available list. It is crucial to carefully consider factors such as location, reputation of the institution, and course availability before making choices. Once the choices are made, candidates must lock their choices within the given deadline. It is advisable to take enough time to make an informed decision and consult with mentors or career counselors if needed.

Seat Allotment Process

There are multiple rounds for the seat allotment process. During each round, seats are allotted based on the candidate’s merit, preferred choices, category, and availability of seats. The NTA publishes the result of the seat allotment on the official website. Candidates who are allotted seats need to download the seat allotment letter and report to the designated college within the stipulated time period to confirm their admission. 

Reporting and Document Verification

Upon reporting to the allotted college, candidates must undergo the document verification process. They need to carry all the necessary documents in original and photocopy format. The documents typically required for verification include NEET scorecard, admit card, mark sheets, passing certificate, category certificate (if applicable), identity proof, passport-size photographs, and other relevant documents as specified by the authorities. It is crucial to ensure that all the documents are in order to avoid any complications during the verification process. 

Seat Acceptance and Fee Payment

After successful document verification, candidates are required to accept the allotted seat by paying the admission fee. The fee amount varies depending on the institution and category. It is important to note that the acceptance of the allotted seat requires payment of the fee within the specified deadline. If any candidate fails to do so, it will result in the cancellation of the allotted seat.

Option to Upgrade or Participate in Subsequent Rounds

Candidates who are satisfied with their allotted seats can choose to freeze their seats. However, those who wish to participate in subsequent rounds for better seat allocation can choose the “float” option. Float option allows candidates to retain their current allotted seat while being eligible for further rounds of seat allotment. If a candidate gets a better seat in subsequent rounds, they can choose to upgrade and forfeit the previous seat.

Subsequent Rounds and Mop-Up Rounds

If seats remain vacant after the initial rounds of seat allotment, subsequent rounds and mop-up rounds are conducted to fill the remaining seats. During these rounds, candidates who have not been allotted any seat or have upgraded their seats can participate and exercise their choice filling options.
