KVPY is the term we all have heard often. It seems quite fascinating to all those who are looking out for the same. The Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY) is a continuing National Program of Fellowship in Basic Sciences. The program is initiated and funded by the Department of Science and Technology. The exam is conducted each year in order to encourage students who are studying Basic Sciences to take up a research career in Science. The main objective of this program is to look out for talented students & help them realize their academic potential and encourage them to take up research careers in Science.

Eligibility Criteria

Stream SA – Students studying in Class XI: Students should have scored 75% (65% for SC/ST/OBC) in aggregate in Math and Science subjects in Class X Board examination.

Stream SX – Students Studying in Class XII: Students should have scored 75% (65% for SC/ST/OBC) in aggregate in Math and Science subjects in Class X Board examination.

Students enrolled in the 2nd year of Cambridge International Examination Board: Students should have scored 75% (65% for SC/ST/OBC) in aggregate in Math and Science subjects in Class X Board examination.

Stream SB – Students studying in 1st year of undergraduate program: Students should have scored 60% (50% for SC/ST/OBC) in aggregate in Math and Science subjects in Class XII Board examination.

The KVPY Fellowship is provided to Indian Nationals to encourage them to study in India. All students pursuing/ intending to pursue under graduate program through Distance Education scheme/correspondence course of any university are not eligible.

Application Procedure

The application process is a very simple one. Follow the below-mentioned steps to complete your application:

  • Register online by visiting the official website.
  • Fill up the Personal and academic details, choose the test Centre and upload your photo, signature and other relevant certificates
  • Pay the application fee only at the KVPY application portal. You can make the payment by using Credit card/ Debit card/ Net Banking or also by downloading the e-challan. Apart from this no other means of payment are accepted

FEE Structure for KVPY

  • For General Category/ OBC: Rs 1000
  • For SC/ST/ PWD: Rs 500

Selection Procedure

There are two steps that are to be followed in order to qualify for the KVPY Exam. That is Stage I i.e. Aptitude Test & Stage 2 which is the Interview Round.

Aptitude Test: After the examination of the application forms and meeting the eligibility criteria for various streams, all the eligible students are called for the Aptitude Test that is to be conducted both in Hindi and English at different centers across the country.

Interview: This is based on your performance in the Aptitude Test. All the short-listed students are eligible to appear for the interview which is the final stage of the selection procedure.

For qualifying the fellowship exam, both the Aptitude Test and Interview marks are taken into consideration.

As per the merit list, 75% weightage is given to the Aptitude Test marks and 25% weightage is given to the Interview marks in the streams SA, SX and SB.

Fellowship Awards

Stream SA: The Fellowship to Selected Fellows is provided after joining the undergraduate courses in basic sciences upon securing a minimum of 60% (50% for SC/ST/ OBC) in Science Subjects in XII Board. During the interim period, the students are also invited to regional/ national science camo with expenses reimbursed.

Stream SX: The Fellowship to the Selected Fellows is provided on joining the undergraduate course in basic sciences upon securing minimum 60% (50% for SC/ST/OBC) in science subjects in XII Board.

Students studying in 2nd year of Cambridge International Examination Board: The Fellowship to Selected Fellows is provided on joining undergraduate course in basic sciences upon securing minimum 60% (50% for SC/ST/OBC) in Science subjects in XII Board.

Stream SB: The Fellowship to Selected Fellows is provided on joining undergraduate course in basic sciences upon securing minimum 60% (50% for SC/ST/OBC) in the 1st-year final exam.

SA/SX/SB – during 1st to 3rd years of B.Sc./B.S./B.Stat./B.Math./Integrated M.Sc./M.S. Rs. 5,000 Rs. 20,000
SA/SX/SB – during 1st to 3rd years of B.Sc./B.S./B.Stat./B.Math./Integrated M.Sc./M.S. Rs. 7,000 Rs. 28,000

In SX/SB, candidates are required to answer any three of four subjects in Part I and any Two of the four subjects in Part II.
