Private tuitions have become a way to make children climb up the ladder of success smoothly. As in schools, there are many children and it’s obvious that the teachers can’t give special attention to everyone. But on the other hand, with private tuitions every child gets the same attention and doubts rectified multiple times. 7 out of 10 parents send their children for private tuitions, either for particular subjects or all, they’re paying extra tuition fees hoping that it will help in making a difference in their child’s academic grades and performance.
We all want to be successful and make the most of our lives including jobs, relationships, parenthood and it could be studying for students and tuition when it comes to tutors. If you have a tutor for your child, there must have been several times when this one question came to your mind – Is my child making the most of his/her tuition? And you could not find the answer to this. So, today we bring you an article that will help you in figuring out if your child’s private tuitions are adequate for him/her or they need something else.
Do they provide you with regular feedback?
Although you might be getting feedback from the school and this is why you opted for a private tutor but does your child’s tutor keep you updated about your child’s performance, improvements, and interests? If yes, then it’s a sign that the tutor has been paying attention to your child and is involved in their learning process. Often parents rely on children for feedback but this needs to stop, communicating with your child’s tutor will help you understand what has been covered and how your child is performing. Arranging direct feedback will help you in communicating your expectations and will also make you more about your child’s progress.
Look out for tutors that give you feedback reports at weekly or monthly intervals to keep you updated and involved.
Are you sure that your child is not burdened with both school and tuition?
On average, a child spends 7-8 hours in school including travel. So, after spending this much time in school, it is likely that your child already gets tired. If he/she has private tuition every day for 2 or more hours, it is obvious that studying will obviously get boring. Your child might feel restless and demotivated to study at all, chances are instead of making the most of their tuitions, they might actually start underperforming. So, this would not be the tutor’s fault.
Make sure that your child’s tuition schedule is a bit flexible and instead of having daily classes, you can ask the tutor to schedule classes on alternate days or weekly classes on weekends. This way your child will not feel burdened as he/she may have enormous time to balance study and play.
Do the tutor’s teaching methods clarify your child’s doubts?
Every teacher has a unique way of teaching, just like every child has a different way of learning things. Finding the right tutor can be a tricky job if you do not understand your child’s needs. You can ask the tutor to visit for a private class or you can visit for two or three classes to get a better understanding of the teacher’s style. How he/she explains a concept, using practical and fun ways or just theory. This will save you and your child from a lot of trouble.
Some tips for finding the right tutor for your child:
1. Qualifications
Do a background check to find out if he/she is a qualified teacher. Does the teacher acquire relevant degrees? If you’re looking for a tutor who specializes in a particular subject, this will help you in checking the background and credibility.
2. Experience
When it comes to private tutors, it’s hard to check if the person acquires relevant experience or not. So, it’s better to at least ask for their experience letters or which grade they specialize in teaching. There are many subject matter experts who can teach both an 8th grade or a 10th-grade student.
But if you look at it from a broader perspective, a 10th-grade student is quite mature as compared to an 8th-grade student. So, teaching an 8th-grade student might require more patience. You need to find out if the tutor has tutored students of your child’s age group or not and take relevant feedback from students and parents etc.
3. Personality
Always lookout for a person who is friendly and has a lot of patience. Sometimes if a child has had a bad experience in school or with teachers, being rude or impulsive, chances are he/she has already formed a negative image for teachers. Make sure the tutor you hire is friendly, social, and capable enough for motivating your child instead of criticizing.
4. Flexibility & Convenience
Nowadays both children and parents have busy schedules and keeping up with the afterschool commitments could make them struggle a bit. So, you should consider a local tutor who stays near your home, so it’s easy for both your child and you to visit. And if you’re preferring a home tutor, opt for an online tutor, as they come with more flexibility.
