The education system has changed over time. Education is no longer limited to learning only a few subjects, it has expanded and it is still expanding. With the coming of the internet we have entered an era of digital learning, where the students have the option of taking courses online. Gone are the days when you had to travel long distances to attend a class. Everything is available online. However, a lot of people still prefer learning in classrooms. So, here is a list of some pros and cons of both types of learning.
Digital learning
Pros
-
- Digital learning can be done anywhere, anytime. All you need is a device of your choice with/without internet connection. You can take classes at your pace in the comfort of your homes. You do not need to travel anywhere. This ensures flexibility of time and place.
-
- The other advantage of digital learning is that if you do not understand a particular point, you can watch the video again or take the session again at your convenience. You can also attend separate doubt clarification sessions. This, due to time issues may not always be feasible in classroom teaching.
- Since, these classes are taken online, you are more responsible for your actions. Digital learning helps students take more responsibility.
Cons
-
- Students who are not motivated enough may fall behind. This could be due to their unhealthy study habits. Encouragement from teachers is a big part of classroom training which is missing in online classes.
-
- Interaction with peers is a major part of learning. In online courses, this is missed. Though you have the option of chatting online and becoming a part of live discussions and debates but some students may not participate in those discussions unless they want to. However, in classroom training, if there is a discussion going on, you also become a part of it just by being there and listening to others.
- Another major disadvantage of digital learning is that not everyone has internet connectivity. Though, internet is a big part of our lives now, a lot of students still do not have access.
Classroom learning
Pros
-
- In classroom learning there is face-to-face interaction with teachers and peers, which enhances learning.
-
- You have the flexibility to stop the teacher and ask your queries there and then. You do not have to wait for the class to finish. In fact, a lot of times, you might understand a concept but application of that concept may be very difficult. Therefore, you can stop the teacher and ask your doubts.
- You do not need internet connection for learning.
Cons
-
- Classroom learning is more instructor focused. Your learning is a lot dependent on how the teacher teaches. However, in online courses your learning is independent of the teachers and is more learner focused.
-
- People have different ways of learning. Online courses have images, text, videos and audios which facilitate learning. However, classroom learning is very dry.
-
- There are times when you do not pay attention and you miss out on everything. In that case, you do not have the feasibility to take the class again.
These are some of the advantages and disadvantages of digital learning and classroom learning. This list would help you decide which method you prefer.
