When It Comes to Competitive Exams, Harsh Parenting Can Backfire

Harsh parenting is a parenting style characterized by high expectations and low responsiveness. Parents who are strict towards their kids have very high expectations of their children and offer little nurturance and feedback. Harsh parenting involves using tactics, such as physical and verbal aggression, which may worsen the behaviours they wish to prevent. The worst part about this situation is that children whose parents use harsh tactics have poor academic outcomes and when it comes to competitive exams, this behaviour can backfire.

Below is a list of a few educational outcomes of harsh parenting:

1) Low Confidence

Children who are treated harshly by their parents often have lower confidence. When parents exert strong psychological control over their children,it leads to low self-esteem, low grades, and problematic behaviour.

2) Become More Reliant on Peers

Children with aggressive parents are more likely to put their friends first and indulge in activities that make them feel good in the short term, rather than focus on their career. Kids end up breaking the rules such as avoiding homework ornot solving mock tests to go out with their friends.

3) Make Wrong Decisions

Strict parents set the rules and leave little room for negotiation as they rarely allow their children to make their own choices. While such parents have high expectations and stringentrules, they also do not allow their children enough freedom to choose what they want to do in life. Rather than letting their children make decisions on their own and face the natural consequences of those choices, such parents hover over their children to ensure that they don’t make mistakes. In case of competitive exams, these kids pursue what their parents want them to and not where their interest lies. This leads to poor academic performance.

4) Rarely Learn to Think on Their Own

Since such kids must follow what their parentssay, they are not encouraged to explore and act independently. They are unable to set their own limits and personal standards. This can eventually lead to issues when parental or authority figure is not around to monitor behaviour.

Below are some tips which parents can follow to ensure their kids perform well and make the most of their IIT-JEE Coaching.

1) Reasonable Expectations

It is crucial for parents to be reasonable about their child’s achievements. Not every child is going to be a genius and achieve 100% in every subject. Each child has different capabilities, and it’s the parent’s responsibility to support their child and watch their confidence soar. Instead of nagging kids to study or make them feel bad for not putting in enough efforts, parents should praise them every time they accomplish their study goals.

2) Good Communication

By keeping an open line of communication, parents tend to have a better relationship with their child and every time the child faces a problem, they’ll approach their parents. Good communication also helps in effectively integrating the different parts of a child’s brain resulting in good performance in competitive examinations.

3) Maintaining A Balance

Parents should develop a proper schedule that providesa good balance between leisure, school, and family. It’s important for kids to unwind a little fromIIT JEE coaching and spend time doing activities they enjoy. It’s also crucial for parents to reward their children for an educational accomplishment from time to time.

4) Avoid Comparisons

Parents who compare their kids with others tend to unknowingly pressurize them. To enhance a child’s self-esteem and self-confidence, parents should never compare them or quote examples of friends or relatives who have previously performed well in competitive exams and have got admissions in reputed colleges. This is highly unfair for any child as everyone has different capabilities. As exam time approaches, anxiety starts creeping in, and children become jittery with the daunting load of the syllabus. Examination stress along with harsh parenting can really squeeze out the energy out of a child and can lead to low grades. So, if you really want your child to perform well and ace the IIT-JEE exam in 2019, keep harsh parenting away and offer positive support to your child.
