College Admissions via CUET: Everything You need to Know
The Ministry of Education has issued guidelines stating that the candidates must qualify for the CUET entrance exam to get admission to well-recognized colleges like JNU, Delhi University, Banaras Hindu University, and the University of Allahabad. Until 2021 many central universities provided admission to the students based on their class 12 board examination marks, resulting in high cut-offs. The National Testing Agency has been allotted the responsibility to conduct the CUET entrance exam and prepare the merit list based on it to combat this problem. As a result of the CUET entrance exam, the weightage of class 12 marks will be reduced, and a fair and common evaluation process will be followed to offer admission to the students.

- Total number of seats offered by the universities through the CUET scores
- Difficulty level of the questions
- Performance of the aspirants in the CUET entrance exam
1. Is the Common University Entrance Test difficult to clear?
No, the CUET exam is not difficult to clear on the first attempt. The CUET syllabus is similar to the class 12 syllabus to a certain extent. Students who know the subjects they have studied in class 12 can easily score well in the exam. Students are suggested to follow a study timetable for this purpose and sit for mock exams after completing their preparation. Mock exams will initiate the process of self-evaluation, which in turn will boost confidence.
2. Is the CUET exam compulsory for admission to all types of courses?
The Common University Entrance Test has been made compulsory for admission to all types of undergraduate and postgraduate courses offered by the colleges. However, students do not have to clear the CUET exam to get admission to engineering and medical colleges. To get admission to engineering and medical colleges, candidates need to clear JEE Mains, BITSAT and NEET exams.
3. How many questions do the candidates have to attempt in the CUET exam?
The question paper is divided into sections, including Section I, Section II and Section III. Section I contains 50 questions, out of which candidates have to answer 40 questions. Section II contains 50 questions on the domain subjects, and the candidate needs to attempt 40 questions only. Section III consists of questions related to current affairs, analytical and logical reasoning and quantitative reasoning. This section consists of 75 questions, out of which candidates have to answer 60 questions as per their choice.
4. How does the National Testing Agency calculate the CUET scores?
The National Testing Agency will follow a normalisation procedure based on the percentile scores to calculate the CUET scores. The highest score of the candidate for each session will be used. The percentile gives an idea about the number of candidates who have scored either equal or lower marks than the topper. The topper in each session is awarded the 100 percentile, and the scores of the other candidates are compared with this percentile. The formula used to calculate the CUET score of a particular candidate is the total number of candidates who have scored less than the topper divided by the total number of students who have appeared in the examination and then multiplied the result by 100.
5. How many times can a candidate appear for the CUET exam?
There is no restriction on the candidates based on their age or gender for appearing in the CUET entrance exam. Candidates who have passed class 12 can apply for the CUET exam. As per the instructions of the National Testing Agency in 2022, candidates are allowed to appear in the examination only once. Candidates who will fail the exam in 2022 will have to wait for their chance in the next year. However, from 2023 onwards, the number of attempts may increase depending on the situation.
