Established in 1994, The North Eastern Hill University commonly referred to as NEHU is a central university in Shillong, Meghalaya. NEHU was started in 1973 and is currently situated in two campuses, Mawkynroh-Umshing, Shillong and Chasingre, Tura. The main campus is in Shillong over 1225 acres of land The university campus being the largest in the northeast region of India. The university is recognized by UGC and assessed by NAAC assuring the university ‘A’ grade accreditation. NEHU is currently ranked 80 among the best universities in India NIRF Rankings, 2023.
The present NEHU affiliation offers professional and other degrees in 79 colleges. NEHU is Likewise, one of the few Universities that offer affiliation to the ‘Minority Educational Institutions’ from all four corners of the country. NEHU provides wide range of general and professional programmes in engineering, science, social sciences, commerce, law, business management, liberal arts etc. Besides, it offers general coaching for the civil service examination for the SC and OBC students in its Dr. Ambedkar Centre. Each year large number of students from NEHU clear their NET, GATE, etc., and many join the Central Civil services or Banking services after their course.

NEHU Admission Process
Scores obtained in the entrance examination are used to admit students to all NEHU UG, PG, and PhD courses. The university accepts national level entrance exams namely: CUET UG for BA, B.Sc, B.Com, BSW, BALLB, BBA, BCA, BTTM, JEE Main for BTech, NATA for B.Arch, GATE for MTech, MAT (AIMA) for MBA) and CUET PG for PG courses MA, M.Com, M.Sc, M.Ed, MBA, MCA, and The last two choices, which they make, involve ranking or a cutoff, which is provided by the university in regards to the scores gotten in the entrance examination. NEHU Placements
It so provides the required platform NEHU had conducted campus drives every year for its students. NEHU Campus & Facilities
All facilities are available in NEHU campus. This makes it possible for student to be provided with a perfect learning environment as pegged by the modern physical facilities that are availed. Besides, NEHU Shillong campus has academic centres for the faculty, staff quarters for teaching and non-teaching staff; guest house; shopping complex; bank; post office; research centres including North East Remote Sensing Centre, North East Biotic Index Centre, and many more. - Hostel: NEHU hostel for boys and girls and for both Indian students and students of other countries. Together it has 23 hostels and it is worth mentioning that all the hostel rooms mentioned above are well furnished, well ventilated, spacious and adequate facilities for water & electricity .
- Library: NEHU has one library at the campus of Shillong and another one at Tura campus. The central library of NEHU have claims of above 2.9 lakh books and 38 thousand bound periodicals and current with 316 international and 366 Indian current Journals. Another reason is that the students here also are allowed to have its digital library making it easier.
- Travel Concessions: NEHU arranges different field trips, study tours and research projects. Those undertaking tours for the above mentioned purposes are provided with rail-tickets concessions as well as very small daily allowances.
