NIT Hamirpur was established as Regional Engineering College in 1864 and was later renamed as NIT Hamirpur in 2003 by the Indian parliament. This institute was established by a joint enterprise of the Indian Government and Himachal Pradesh Government. Initially the classes for this institute commenced in Government Polytechnic College, Hamirpur and later moved to the current campus in 1987.
In earlier times, this institute only had 3 departments (Civil Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering and Mechanical Engineering). It later added more departments and till this date there are 13 departments in this institute offering Engineering, Management and Humanities programs.
