Responding to the concerning trend of low admissions based on the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) in various degree colleges across Jammu and Kashmir, the Higher Education Department has taken a proactive step for the academic session 2024-25. Recognizing the challenges faced by students, particularly due to geographical constraints and infrastructure limitations, the department has exempted 64 Government Degree Colleges from mandating CUET scores.
Under the directive issued by Under Secretary to the government, Sanjay Kumar Tickoo, a total of 35 government colleges in the Jammu division and 29 colleges in the Kashmir region have been exempted from CUET-based admissions. This decision stems from a thorough reassessment of the situation, conducted in consultation with all stakeholders, after observing very low CUET-based admissions in certain colleges during the previous academic year.
The communication from the department highlights the specific criteria considered for exemption, including geographical constraints, topography, and infrastructure availability, which deterred students from opting for CUET-based admissions. Additionally, colleges located in remote areas such as Marwah, Tangdhar, Gurez, and Mahore, where CUET-based admissions placed students at a disadvantage, have been particularly addressed.
CUET-2024, scheduled from May 15 to May 31, 2024, serves as a nationwide evaluation platform for candidates seeking admission to various undergraduate programs. However, recognizing the unique challenges faced by students in Jammu and Kashmir, the Higher Education Department has ensured that admissions to the exempted colleges for the academic session 2024-25 will not require CUET scores.
Instead, admissions in these colleges will be centrally managed through the e-SAMARTH portal, with the evaluation primarily based on 12th class marks. This centralized approach aims to streamline the admission process and provide equitable opportunities for aspiring students across the region.
Mastering CUET 2024 Challenge: Strategic Approaches to Excel in the Exam
The exemption of these government degree colleges from CUET-based admissions underscores the commitment of the Higher Education Department to facilitate access to quality higher education for all students, regardless of their geographical location or background. This proactive measure is a testament to the department’s dedication to promoting inclusivity and ensuring equal opportunities for educational advancement in Jammu and Kashmir.
