NCERT Solutions for Class 6 English Supplementary Chapter 4 : The Old-Clock Shop

The story explores how honest ways can win over any situation, even robbers. The same way Mr Ray not only protected himself but showed the right path to the robbers as well. The story conveys the message of peace and good for all. It begins on a Christmas evening when it was closing time for shops and the old-clock shop owner, Ray was on a clock when two men entered his shop. He gave them a notepad and a pencil indicating to them that he was deaf and dumb using his sign language. While he was talking, Ray noticed that the man had a gun in his pocket and thought that the men had come in his shop to rob him. Understanding their need for money, Ray told them that he exchanged money with people for their watches or wall clocks which he did for goodwill and not in want of interest or security against it. The old man showed his old wristwatch to Ray, and Ray offered him a fifty-dollar note. This made the man happy for he got money without hurting Ray and Ray escaped from being grievously hurt, and the story concludes by giving a simple message of "Peace on earth and goodwill towards all".
