NCERT Solutions for Class 6 English Poem Chapter 2: The Kite

If you have ever flown a kite and wondered why kites fly, then this poem is for you. It talks about a kite as it flies in the sky by talking about its colours, shapes and forms and describing the kite's motion in the sky. The poem has a beautiful and coherent rhyme scheme that is very easy to read due to its simple language and has been written by Harry Behn. The poem contains high use of personification and compares the movement of the kite to a sailing ship and its trajectory in high tides and winds. It ends with the eventual personification of the wind coming again and picking up the kite, for a new journey to be set upon in the bright blue sky on another day.

  • The poem encourages several activities at the end of it such as letting children call out pairs of rhyming words and additionally, they can also pick up other words like 'kite', 'breeze', 'dive', etc. and form newer pairs.
  • Children can also be asked to look for words that are associated with a bird for example-‘tail', and upon a little lingering, words of action can also be emphasised such as 'dive', 'dip', 'soars', 'climbs', and 'flaps'.
  • Since the poem is relatively simple, the children will become familiar with the words after a couple of readings and thus can become volunteers to recite the poem with appropriate gestures to understand spoken poetry.
