NCERT Solutions for Class 6th English Chapter 4: An Indian-American Woman in Space

Born in Karnal, Haryana and becoming a U.S. citizen after marriage, this woman defied the limits of being a girl and did the impossible: being the first Indian woman to go to space. We are, of course, talking about Kalpana Chawla, the woman who made our nation proud. The story talks about her life and how she moved to the U.S. after her marriage and becoming an aerospace engineer and starting her life at National Aeronautical and Space Administration (NASA) as a pilot and making her way up as an astronaut and more specifically, the first Indian-American woman astronaut. The story also talks about how she became the first Indian woman to go to space for 15 days and the tragic story of how the crewmembers of her space shuttle including her died while trying to enter the earth's atmosphere.
- Through the story, the children can be allowed to speak what they know about space and spaceships.
- They may also be asked to bring pictures of these if they have any and can talk about the differences between an aeroplane and a spaceship.
- The chapter can also be used to explain the different types of English that exist around the world as in this chapter, there is the usage of American English and can be explained using simple words how writing does not adequately represent the spoken language.
- In the 'working with language' section children can be helped by giving clues as they discuss and match the items using phrases in sentences on their own and the speaking and writing activities can allow them to brainstorm and have stimulating discussions before going on with the activity.
