NCERT Solutions for Class 6th Poem English Chapter 7: Vocation

The poem by Rabindranath Tagore talks about a child's wishes and attractions and shows the state of their wavering but the innocent mind. The poem is on how a child gets attracted to the different ways in which people are around him and finds these differences interesting and inquisitive. At three different points during the day, he notices different hawkers and gets intrigued by their independent and liberated way of life. In the first part of the day, he sees the vendor selling bangles and wishes to be a peddler and move freely to any place he wanted just like him. In the evening, he sees the plant specialist burrowing the ground which made him want to be a nursery worker so that he could play in the dust and finally at night when he goes to bed, he sees the guardian through his window, and he wishes to be a gatekeeper so that he could also move in the streets at night freely without any hesitation.

  • The poem, when recited with a feeling, has an impact on children by drawing their attention to the importance of every job or piece of work.
  • The child's curiosity and desire to be left alone sometimes may also be expressed in discussions. It would be fun to answer them in this regard with understanding and sympathy.
  • In the activity "I wish I were...", if children are facing difficulty doing it then can be suggested vocations and callings which can lead to interesting explanations and accounts. The final activity involves children to use their hand, heart and head together.
  • To understand the dignity of labour, children should be taken out to visit places of work and be encouraged to talk to workers.
