NCERT Solutions for Class 6th English Chapter 5: A Different Kind of School

The fifth chapter by E.V Lucas talks about a different kind of school where its students are taught to sympathise with and help each other. The story starts with the writer having heard a lot about Miss Beam's School and said that they were using new methods of teaching to make the children better citizens and that made the writer want to check it for himself and therefore visited Miss Beam's school and upon entering saw a girl whose eyes were covered with bandages and was being carefully being led by a little boy. And later it is told by Miss Beam herself how her methods were simple but different as it attempted to teach thoughtfulness and kindness instead of a mere thought by allowing the children to step into the lives of others.

  • The lesson addresses an important social concern for the differently-abled and aims to sensitise learners to the problems faced by such people.
  • The students can be made to discuss this by giving examples of differently-abled persons who have reached the heights of success.
  • In 'working with the text', the children can work in pairs to rearrange the sentences if more than one orders exist, then it can be explained why one is better than the other.
  • Exercise 3, in 'working with language' is to acquaint children with the use of the dictionary by letting them create their dictionary by arranging words and their meanings, to begin with as a head start.
