NCERT Solutions for Class 7 Social Science History Chapter 1:Tracing the Changes through a Thousand Years

iacst-2022

History is contextual. It means when historians and archaeologists read documents, maps and texts from the past. They have to tread lightly on those paths and be sensitive to the piece of information, and its interpretation which could belong to multiple historical backgrounds. Which is why not only do multiple interpretations of the same piece of text may exist, it may also exist in a different language which is considered to have been changed considerably over the years. For example Medieval Persian is different from the modern Persian that became popular in the later years and English used in the Elizabethan age is considerably different from what is being used today and the movement of language does not stop here since language is ever-evolving in nature

While 'India' has existed as a geographical and cultural entity for a long time now, the term 'Hindustan' took a much longer time to find the political and national meanings we resonate with today. This is also prevalent during the medieval period as back then a "foreigner" was a stranger who appeared in a given part of the country and did not belong to that place's society and culture. However, today a "foreigner" is somebody that has come from a different nation altogether. This created an interesting situation back in the day as then a city-dweller would naturally call a forest-dweller as a "foreigner" due to the normal usage of the word, but two peasants living in the same village who had different backgrounds and castes were not "foreigners." Through chapter 1 of NCERT Social Science- History students will understand how religions, sciences, cultures and traditions have changed over the years.
