1800-102-2727This chapter develops ideas around gender inequalities in work and describes women's struggles for equality, pointing out that opportunities like education and employment are not equally available to boys and girls. After reading about two Indian women's lives, from the 19th and 20th centuries, students see how women struggled to change their lives by becoming literate. The previous chapter elaborated the differences between boys and girls. We saw how women's work in the household is not recognised as work. Further, we read how doing household work and taking care of family members is a full-time job.
The job has no specific hours at which it begins or when it ends. This chapter will introduce us to work outside the home, and we will understand how some occupations are more suitable for men than women. We will also learn about women's struggle for equality. Access to education was and still is, one way new opportunities were created for women. This chapter will also briefly shed some light on the women's movement's different efforts to challenge discrimination in more recent years. The chapter concludes with a photo-essay. It gives examples of different strategies the women's movement has used to fight for change.
