This Chapter discusses settlement and its types, the different types of transport and services, etc. Settlements are defined as the places where people build their homes which can be permanent or temporary. Temporary settlements are those in which a group of houses are built for a short period whereas permanent settlements in which homes are built for a long period.
The four major means of transport available are roadways, railways, waterways and airways but it was always not the same as the early human beings depended entirely on nature for food, clothing, and shelter but as society progressed, they learned the art of building homes, growing food, and developing means of transport. While early humans depended on nature for shelter, agriculture came into existence as there was a need for the crops' permanent shelter. So villages, towns, and cities started growing around areas with water and fertile land for agriculture. As society progressed, settlements turned into civilisations that existed mostly along the river banks. From there, we slowly developed different modes of transport over land, water, and air to help people travel all over the world easily.
We developed mass-media and communication systems such as TV, satellites, and the Internet to give us the power to communicate with anyone, anywhere and anytime. All of this has made the world a smaller place because people are now connected more than ever before
