NCERT Solutions for Class 7 English Supplementary Reader Chapter 8: The Bear Story

"The bear story" is about a bear brought up as a pet by a lady. The Bear story shows us the lovable side of a bear. The lady brought the bear when he was small, and she started taking care of and feeding him. After a few years, the bear grew and became a big adult. However, he was a friendly bear who enjoyed catching grazing cattle, and children also enjoyed playing with him. The bear was given good food and was fed very well by the cook. The diet of the bear included potato, porridge, cabbage, bread, and turnip.

Once, the bear tried to pluck the beehive that was hanging at the branch of the tree. So, he was punished for harming the bees. The punishment was that he was put on-chain for two days rather than being put on-chain only at night.

After that, the bear used to be in chains for Sundays and once, when the bear was in the chain due to his mistress, the lady had left to visit her sister's home. As she walked into the forest, she noticed that the bear was following her. She got angry at the bear for not obeying her words. She turned back and yelled at the bear to go home. But the bear didn't obey her, and he was not wearing the collar given by her. So, she got angry and decided to punish the bear.

The lady then hit the bear using her parasol with a hard force that it broke into two pieces. The bear then went back but took a look back at the lady. On returning, she decided to chain the bear for two more days and found that her bear had already been chained and realised that the bear in the forest was not hers but rather a wild creature.
