1800-102-2727The story was about an old couple who lived in 19th century Japan with their dog, Muko. The older man was a rice farmer, and Muko followed him to work every day. The old fellow was patient and kind to every living creature. One day the dog went running to him, motioned him to some spot behind. As Muko started scratching, the older men dug the earth. He found a pile of gold. They bought a piece of land with gold and gave a feast for their friends and poor neighbours.
There lived a wicked older man and his wife in the same village. As they heard of their neighbour's luck, they called Muko into their garden. They offered fish thinking that Muko would find them a treasure. Muko took them to a pine tree, and the greedy old one started to dance. When he dug all, he found a dead cat in the pit. He beat Muko to death.
Muko's owners mourned for him and put flowers on its tomb. Muko's spirit appeared in the older man's dream that night, asking him to cut down the pine tree over its grave and make a mortar for rice pastry and a mill for his bean sauce. The old farmer did as per the spirit's word, and the whole mass changed into gold coins.
The older man had another dream of Muko's spirit asking him to take ashes of the mill and spread that on the withered pine trees to make that bloom again and then he found the trees covered with blossoms. The wealthy village landlord was to pass by the road, and the old custom asked people to shut down windows and bow. The good older man scattered the ash bits over the withered cherry tree without kneeling. The landlord was surprised to see them bursting into blossoms. He offered the man good presents and invited him to the castle. When the greedy neighbour tried to do the same with the landlord, it became worse. The escorting man dragged the greedy one from the tree and beat him to death in the mud. The good old Muko's owner lived happily.
