The narrator shares his experience with the baby elephant right from his childhood. The story begins as the narrator got the elephant when it was just five months old, and it used to live in a pavilion along with the narrator. The story tells that the elephant keeps bumping into poles of thick tree stumps. Morning baths in the river were a heavenly thing for Kari.
Kari lays down in the water for a longer time and enjoys the pleasure. After taking a bath, Kari used to go into the forest to collect twigs for his food; meanwhile, the narrator prepares food for himself.
Kari is not only a sweet elephant but also clever, mischievous and notorious. In the meantime, Kari liked eating bananas and started stealing them. He puts his trunk through the window of the dining room and takes the bananas from the plate. As he is clever, he is smarter enough to react to the narrator's commands. Also, Kari had quickly learnt a few tricks to find the master when he is lost and to safeguard himself from the predators. He also mastered all signals and sounds that he was taught. When the master got lost, he made a strange hissing sound, and the trained elephant would root out the tree in front. This would scare the other animals, including tigers, away.
One important and unforgettable incident in Kari's and the narrator's life was that Kari pushed his master into the stream who didn't know swimming. He was in a situation of saving another boy who was drowning in the water. At last, Kari saved both the boys from drowning. This story portrays the sweet relationship between the animals and human beings and leaves the message that they are the best companions of humans in their harder situations.
