Mrs Pumphrey gives him extra snacks like malt, cod-liver oil, Horlicks other than his meals and cream cakes and chocolates for his sweet tooth. Even though she expects this to improve his condition, the overfeeding does worse for him as he is deprived of any exercise thus, making him fat and lazy.
Eventually, Tricki is sick, and Mrs Pumphrey becomes worried about him. He becomes bulky, so she contacts Mr James Herriot, a veterinary surgeon, to treat the dog. James Herriot decreases his food and keeps him under observation. He later increases his food intake and makes him exercise to improve his health.
However, Mr Herriot enjoys good food and wine in the name of Tricki, and he doesn't want to lose these privileges. Hence, he wishes to keep him as a permanent guest. Eventually, Tricki is cured of his illness and is ready to go home. Tricky loved his mistress and was thrilled to go back home and seemed excited at her sight.
Mrs. Pumphrey was filled with gratitude towards Mr Herriot for curing her dog and felt she couldn't thank him enough for the wonder he had done for her pet. In her opinion, Tricki was very serious and she felt his chances for improvement were significantly less. Hence, his improvement without any treatment was truly an achievement. She felt this was indeed a triumph of surgery.
