NCERT Solutions for Class 8 Social Science Civics Chapter 8: Confronting Marginalisation

This chapter gives a detailed account of a societal evil of India, i.e., the marginalised section. Students are made aware of the social evils for invoking a sense of urgency to rectify them and support the cause of the marginalised. The points brief out the chapter:

  • Dalit, which means 'broken'. The term is used deliberately and actively by various groups. It is done to highlight the centuries of discrimination they have experienced within the caste system.
  • With the formation of the Indian constitution, special provision had been made for the sole purpose of the upliftment of the marginalised.
  • Article 17, 15, and other fundamental rights protect the marginalised section of society.
  • The Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989 is a milestone and a step towards protecting the marginalised section.
  • The chapter further discusses the scourge of manual scavenging.
