NCERT Solutions for Class 8 Social Science Civics Chapter 7: Understanding Marginalisation

This chapter gives a detailed account of India's societal evil, i.e., the marginalised section referred to as the Dalits. It discusses the phenomenon of ghettoisation and concludes by discussing the consequences that arise due to such ghettoisation. Students are conscious of the social evils for evoking a sense of necessity in them to rectify them. The following points brief out the chapter in:

  • Ghettoisation is a process that leads to the section being marginalised. This process may occur due to reasons ranging from social and cultural, to economic.
  • Mainstream in a cultural context includes the customs and practices that are followed by the people of the dominant community.
  • Hierarchy is a graded system which creates an arrangement of people or things. Usually, people at the bottom of these hierarchies are the ones who have the least power. The caste system is hierarchical, and Dalits are considered to be at the lowest end.
