NCERT Solutions for Class 7 Science Chapter 10: Respiration in Organisms

From chapters of chemistry, the book moves on to the chapter of biology. The chapter starts with the discussions of different types of respiration processes such as Aerobic respiration and Anaerobic respiration. Having discussed the mode of respiration in humans, it discusses the respiration processes of different animals such as cockroaches, earthworms and fishes. Students who aspire to become doctors must pay special attention to the chapter as these concepts become basic foundations for their studies. The following are the points discussed in the chapter:

  • Respiration is essential for the survival of living organisms as it releases energy from the food. The oxygen we inhale is used to break down glucose into carbon dioxide and water.
  • The breakdown of glucose that occurs in the cells of an organism is known as cellular respiration.
  • Aerobic respiration is the process where the breakdown of food takes place in the presence of oxygen.
  • When the breakdown occurs without the use of oxygen, the respiration is called anaerobic respiration.
  • The respiratory organs for the exchange of gases vary in different organisms.
  • In a plant, the roots take in air present in the soil. Leaves exchange gases through their tiny pores called stomata.
