NCERT Solutions for Class 7 Science Chapter 8: Winds, Storms and Cyclones

In class 6, it was established that moving air is called wind. Class 7 builds its content upon the concepts learnt in class 6 by conducting various experiments and showing how the air around us affects us. Terms like Hurricane, Tornado, Typhoon, and Thunderstorm have been introduced. Students are advised to understand the science behind the climate change for this chapter is studied in great detail in the subject of geography. The following are a few important concepts that one gathers from the chapter:

  • The air around us exerts pressure. It expands on heating and contracts on cooling.
  • The moving air is called wind. Uneven heating on the earth is the main cause of wind movements.
  • Winds carrying water vapour bring rain. High-speed winds and air pressure difference can cause cyclones.
  • Satellites and radars are used to monitor cyclones.
  • A cyclone is known by different names in different parts of the world. It is called a 'hurricane' in the American continent. In the Philippines and Japan, it is called a 'typhoon'.
  • A tornado looks like a dark funnel-shaped cloud that reaches from the sky to the ground.
