She wanted to live life without any restrictions. Santosh's parents sent their kids to the best school in Delhi. At the age of sixteen, Santosh was asked to marry, but she threatened her family not to marry unless she completes her studies. She had earned herself by working part-time and paid for her education fees.
After completing school, she joined Maharani College in Kasturba Hotel. There she had found a keen interest in climbing the mountains. She saved some money and enrolled for the course at Uttarkashi's Nehru Institute of mountaineering. Santosh went to the expedition every year. Her physical fitness, determination, mental toughness, resistance to cold and altitude improved her climbing skills quickly. At 22 years of age, she became the first youngest woman to conquer Mount Everest. She even provided special care to her fellow climber who was dying at the south col.
But unfortunately, he could not be saved. However, she managed to save another climber by sharing her oxygen. She got a second invitation from Initio- Nepalese Women's expedition to go to Mount Everest, and she once again got success. She was also an Environmentalist and had brought down about 500 kg of garbage from the Himalayas.
