"The Happy Prince" is a story about a prince who always remained happy. So everyone named him the happy prince. He was very kind and helpful. When he died, a very long golden statue was made that stood above a high column. After that, the prince used to cry all day, looking at his city's ugliness and misery. He would help all the poor with the help of a bird.

One day he saw a poor house where women and his kid lived. The kid was down with a fever, and he asked for oranges, but the mother could not afford oranges. So the prince asked the bird to pick out a ruby from his sword and take it to her. The bird followed the order. Then the prince saw a young man in a garret who was writing a play. It was so cold that he was unable to write, and he had no money to buy firewood. The prince requested the bird to take out his Sapphire from one of his eyes and give it to the young man to buy firewood.

The bird did not want to make a happy prince blind from one eye, but the prince insisted on doing so. The prince saw a match girl who had let her matches fall into a gutter on the next day. Her father would beat her if she did not take money home. The prince ordered the bird to take out the Sapphire from the other eye and give it to her. Ultimately the happy prince became blind.

He asked the bird to give all the gold in his statue to poor people in the city. When everyone got the gold, their face was glowing, but the prince became dull. That winter, the prince's bird died because of a cold, and it broke his heart.
